TANFORAN SHOWS PROFITS San Bruno Course Concludes Successful 24-Day Meeting. Final Days Business Puts Average Mutuel Handle at 6,000 Neves Takes Riding Honors. SAN BRUNO, Cal., May 27. John W. Marchbank and his associates "quit winner" at the twenty-four day meeting, which came to a conclusion with the running of Saturdays card. With about a 5,000 daily handle all that was necessary to take care of expenses, an average of over 6,000 per day was reached through the big business on closing day and when the "gate," which was no small item during the early days of the meeting, is taken into consideration, it is plain that the track realized a neat profit. Where the management of Bay Meadows erred in offering purses out of all proportion to the horses performing at the meeting, the money put up for the races at the San Bruno course was in keeping with the horses on the grounds. Tops for Tanforan racing was ,500, while Bay Meadows gave one 5,000 stake, another 0,000 race, and a couple of events for ,000. The difference in purse money is just about the profit garnered by the Tanforan management. Tanforan according to unofficial reports, will get the first crack at Bay district racing in the fall, and should again stage a meeting that will finish on the right side of the ledger. It is generally conceded that the Marchband course will open early in October, following the California fall fairs, and race out their remaining twenty-six days. Bay Meadows, although nothing has been announced, will probably follow Tanforan, while Santa Anita is scheduled to swing open its gates on Christmas day. With the close of the Tanforan meeting, there was a general hegira from the track. Six carloads of horses entrained for Agua Caliente, a dozen carloads for Seattle, and several stables for Omaha. Turfminded Cal-ifornians must look to Agua Caliente for their sport during the next few months as the thoroughbreds will not again return to the state until the Stockton Fair opens in mid-August. Directing owner Marchbank, following the running of Saturdays card, expressed himself as well pleased with the meeting. "We made a sincere attempt to give the San Francisco public the best sport possible and are greatly pleased with their response to our efforts," stated Mr. Marchbank. "We will endeavor to line up large eastern stables for our fall session," he added. Jockey Ralph Neves, under contract to Mrs. C. B. Irwin, proved by far the best rider of the Tanforan meeting. Spotting R. Colpitts five days due to an enforced idleness, Neves beat the latter by four winning mounts. Neves received a wrist watch for topping the Tanforan pilots but was fined 00 for causing a jam with one of his mounts on closing day.
