LAT0N1A DERBY FIELD Nearly All of Best Three-Year-Olds of Year May Start. Reaping Reward and Heelfly Probable Choices Flying Scot Rates Highly Not Without Admirers. LATONIA, Ky., June 9 With the exception of the injured champion, War Admiral, practically every three-year-old of consequence is designated as a starter in the fifty-fifth renewal of the 5,000 added La-tonia Derby, scheduled for Saturday afternoon at the historic old course, thus providing a race that will compare favorably with any staged this year, in so far as class is concerned. Preparations have been completed for the handling of, the seven invaders due to arrive at Latonia, Thursday, by track superintendent Charles Nolte. Six of this number are due from Chicago, while the remaining one is en route from New York. They include the Milky Way Farms Reap ing Reward and either Military or Murph, Valdina Farms Eagle Pass, Raoul Walshs Sunset Trail H., Mrs. W. H. Fursts Over The Top, and E. E. Fogelsons Grey Count; while the eastern invader is J. H. Whitneys Flying Scot. DANGEROUS CANDIDATE. Judging from the manner in which the j Three Ds Stock Farms Heelfly accounted for the Preparation Purse here Tuesday afternoon, the Texas-bred three-year-old son of Royal Ford Canfli is certain to provide some stern opposition for those en route to compete for the stake that is not only richly endowed but is one of the traditionally famous three-year-old events of the American I turf. There are few races staged annually in the United States that surpasses the Latonia Derby in tradition, it having had its inception in 1883, when the thoroughbred sport: ! was first inaugurated here, and has been staged without interruption since that time. With such a formidable array of three-year-olds as that which will compete on this occasion, Saturdays event takes rank with the best offered during its long history. That the race promises to develop into a keenly contested affair is reflected in the accomplishments of the various eligibles thus far this season. Reaping Reward, Continued on thirty-eighth page. LATONIA DERBY FIELD Continued from first page. which proved somewhat of a disappointment in the sixty-third Kentucky Derby, when the best he could do was to finish third to War Admiral and Pompoon, now appears to have reached the pinnacle that was hoped for at Churchill Downs. IMPROVED FORM. The fleet son of Sickle Dust Whirl gave evidence of his improved form by romping to an impressive score in the Yacht Club Purse at Washington Park last Monday, and off that showing is regarded as worthy of sharing favoritism with Heelfly, winner in the Inaugural Handicap and Preparation Purse here. Like Reaping Reward,. Heelfly did not live up to the expectations of trainer Jock Pryce. and E. Paul and Guy L. Waggoner, owners of the Three Ds Stock Farm in the Kentucky Derby. Considering the manner in which War Admiral went on to conquer all ! opposition in the Preakness and the Belmont, the failure of these two capable three-year-olds was far from disgracful. While Reaping Reward and Heelfly are receiving most mention as the running of the Latonia Derby nears, "Jock" Whitneys Flying Scot is not without a following, particularly the eastern contingent, who saw the chestnut son of The Porter Caledonia trounce a superb field in the Withers at Belmont Park.
