BETSY ROSS TO SPINDLETOP Juvenile Stake at Suffolk Downs Results in Stirring . Contest Last Lay Head Behind. BOSTON, Mass., June 9. Miss Anita Doris Spindletop signalled the fact that she is one of the fastest young f illys in these parts as she sped to victory in the Betsy Ross Stakes, for juvenile fillies, which featured the mid-week sport at Suffolk Downs. The event brought a rousing finish, the winner whipping up just in time to get the decision by a head over Manhasset Stables Last Lay, which was coupled in the betting with Royal Rhapsody. A neck back of the leading pair Cary T. Graysons Third Party, heavily backed favorite, was third. Handcuff was the fourth filly across the line and was only half a length back of the third horse. Last Lay began in front, but Jimmy Lynch had the Doris filly off very fast and set sail for the leader before they had travelled a sixteenth of a mile. The field was well bunched in the short run to the far turn. As they made that turn Last Lay gained, but once they straightened out for the drive to the wire both Third Party and Spindletop were well within striking distance. At the eighth post it was anybodys race. Third Party began to drop back, inch by inch in the final sixteenth, and Lynch bore down on Spindletop, rousing that filly to renewed effort Seventy yards out Spindletop and Last Lay were head . and head. Third Party was driving hard, but was obviously a beaten horse. The leading pair whipped over the line closely lapped, but .Spindletop dropped her head down in front a few yards from the end and kept it there. Third Party was a tired horse as they finished, and Handcuff would have taken third had the race been a bit longer. None of the others figured seriously in the race at any stage. Nine accepted. The day was warm and bright and a crowd of 16,500, according to the official turnstile count, was out for the sport.
