PROPH HAS FINE SPEED Gallops Six Furlongs in 1:11 to Win at Latonia. Big Crowd Present Despite Threatening Weather Screen Accounts for Purse in Fourth Race. LATONIA, Ky., June 9. Displaying considerable courage and fine speed in the final furlong, J. W. Parrishs Proph, an eligible for the 5,000 added Latonia Derby, but an unlikely participant in the historic stake, completed the Fort Mitchell Handicap, six furlongs sprint headlining this afternoons program at Latonia, a scant margin of a nose before the Rockhome Stables Dora May. Proph completed the six furlongs in 1:11, which compared favorably with the fastest time for the distance recorded thus far. Mrs. R. J. Murphys Little Nymph was third, a length and a half farther back and only a half length in front of the Shadybrook Farms Visigoth. What was the largest week-day gathering of the season turned out despite the fact that threatening clouds hovered over the course throughout the day, and there was a serious threat of a downpour several times during the afternoon. However, only a slight drizzle fell at intervals and did not have any effect on the racing strip. The finish of the Fort Mitchell Handicap accounted for the first photograph in several days at the course, but as Proph and Dora May went past the line almost as a- team the placing judges decided to await the development of the picture before making a decision. Dora May, from the locally owner Rock-home Stable of Mrs. G. .- Simone, had exhibited sparkling speed in scoring in a pre-vioits race and was in front for a good portion of the journey in the Quickstep Handicap last Saturday, though she did not relish the sort of footing that prevailed, so it was no surprise that she hopped away from the starting gate today and set the pace. Belle of Midway gave chase to the leader for the first quarter, while Proph was back in fifth position as a third of the journey was traversed. Before reaching the stretch turn Silk Mask displaced Belle of Midway as the runner-up and the ultimate winner moved into third place. Improving his position with every stride, the chestnut son of .High Time steadily reduced the margin separating him from the leader and after waging a nip-and-tuck duel from the final sixteenth, managed to poke his muzzle" in front just as the finish was reached.
