MAIN RACE CANCELED Torrential Downpour of Rain and Hail Hits Detroit Track. Remainder of Card Holds Up Well Despite Muddy Footing Late Day Earns Purse. DETROIT, Mich., June 14. A torrential downpour which -was accompanied by a hailstorm visited the Fair Grounds course of the Detroit Racing Association at the time when most patrons were ready to leave for the course. However, the skies cleared soon afterward and a surprisingly large crowd was present for the opening of the third full week of the spring season. Rain during the week-end and more this morning caused the cancellation of the original sixth event, the main attraction, but the carded substitute replaced it and the other races held up in good style. The track was in muddy condition, but the sport as a whole was formful and interesting. The fourth race and the only one of the eight races not carrying the claiming clause resulted in a victory for the locally owned Bomar Stable when Late Day, an unsexed three-year-old son of Jean Valjean and Shades o Night, was an easy winner. Hal Price Headleys Middle Brook, a 2 to 1 choice, was second, slightly more than a length back of the winner and a nose before I. Korts Rolodo. OBantam came from a good way back during the run through the stretch to save fourth from Captain Byam and Texas Rose which completed the field. OLD GLORY PURSE MARRED. The Old Glory Purse, which served as the fifth race, was marred when Born Lucky bore out badly approaching the final three-eighths and Jildac Rose finished on her own courage when Jockey J. Longs feet slipped from the stirrup irons. The race resulted in a driving finish with Cruising leading the heavily supported Merry Caroline by a head. Jildac Rose was third, some five lengths back of Merry Caroline and four lengths before Born Lucky, which drove down on the extreme outside to beat Brass Buttons by a head for fourth laurels. Lee Hardy hustled the Bomar gelding to the front in the first few strides, but Texas Rose raced with him to the far bend, where she gave up the task. Rapidly attaining the good advantage he was merely coasting along when "Herb" Fisher charged down on the outside with the favorite during the final sixteenth. Hardy, however, had placed Continued on thirty-ninth page. MAIN RACEJCANCELED Continued from first page. the victor under steadying restraint and Middle Brooks challenge meant nothing. Rolodo was a strong factor throughout, and but for being taken on the inside and deepest going in the stretch, she probably would have been a stronger factor. The sixth race, which was the carded substitute, resulted in another surprise and easy victory when Count Cotton turned back Doc Oster, Burning Billows and five others at the end of six furlongs. The Jurist, a nine-to-five choice, quit badly after showing the way for five-sixteenths. TWO IN A BOW. O. F. Woodwards Baste made it two in a row when he was an easy winner of the first race, for plater three-year-olds at six furlongs. Imperial Polly was second, two and one-half lengths back of the winner and favorite and a nose before Saxlen, which carried off minor honors. All Night won his second race of the meeting and completed a double for F. Jones when he made every post a winning one in the second race, over one mile and a furlong, Oddesa Clark was second and third went to Imperial High. Jones rode the winner in good fashion. Repulsing the bids of Wild Oak, Aria and then Oddesa Clark, All Night reached the finish three lengths before the latter, which .enjoyed the same margin over the tiring Imperial High, which enjoyed favoritism over the winner. Grand Waters scored his second straight ; victory when he carried -A. N. Goldbergs colors to a handy and mild surprise triumph in the third race, for which Oddesa Lady, which finished last in the small field of eight, was a heavy supported choice. Fern-star was second and Dominant Darby third. John Thorwald, Dallas sportsman and owner of Station WRR, arrived from his home to inspect the horses he has here in charge of L. M. Holmes. i 001 ,2nUQ oO
