REAPING REWARD LAME Latonia Derby Winner Ruptures Ligament Out for Year. Son of Sickle Gave Outstanding Display of Courage in Covington Victory Future Uncertain. LATONIA, Ky., June 14. Whatever hopes Mrs. Ethel V. Mars had of adding the American Derby to her collection of stake prizes with Reaping Reward vanished with the running of the fifty-fifth Latoina Derby. The sturdy and courageous son of Sickle ruptured a ligament just above the ankle of his left foreleg that will prevent him from filling his engagement In that fixture at Washington Park next Saturday. Trainer Robert McGarvey of the Milky Way Farm expressed the opinion that Reaping Reward would be out of action for the remainder of the year before loading the Latonia Derby winner, Military and Quick Getaway on an express car for Chicago Sunday evening. Reaping Rewards leg filled considerably over Saturday night, despite the fact that attending veterinarians worked on the injured member throughout the night, and the Milky Way standard bearer was extremely lame when placed on the car for his return to the Windy City. REST AT PULASKI FARM. Whether Reaping Reward will remain in Chicago or will be shipped back to the farm at Pulaski, Tenn., had not been decided upon by McGarvey at the time of his departure, but there is a strong possibility that the Latonia Derby winner will be sent to the farm to permit the injury sufficient time to heal. The ligament was ruptured during the running of the Latonia Derby and jockey Alfred Robertson, who was astride the Milky Way representative, stated that he felt the son of Sickle give way under him as he sent him into the lead near the stretch turn. However, the game runner pulled himself together and stood a long, hard drive through the stretch to outstay Eagle Pass and won by the margin of a half length. H. Whitney, was returned to New York. All of the racers except Reaping Reward came out of Saturdays race in good shape and are ready to fill their future engagements. Jockeys Alfred Robertson, Jackie West-rope and Basil James, who came from Chi-cagdto ride Reaping Reward, Over the Top and Eagle Pass, respectively in the Latonia Derby, returned to the Windy City over the week-end and got back into action Monday afternoon. Johnny Gilbert, the pilot of Flying Scot, got away for New York Saturday night to rejoin the main division of the J. H. Whitney stable in the East.
