Here and There on the Turf Reaping Rewards Win Impres-- sive. Dawn Play Seeks American Derby. Sceneshifter Likely Dwyer Choice. Well Rewarded Starts Fine Double. ----- --....-----..---..4 Heaping Reward came into his own as a three-year-old with his thrilling victory in the Latonia Derby Saturday, but fate was unkind at the same time and the good son of Sickle and Dustwhirl may have to wait as long as War Admiral before returning to the wars. Consequently the star of Mrs. Ethel V-: Mars galaxy of brilliant performers will be- among those absent in the American Derby field this week-end. With Reaping Reward out, the Washington Park attraction shapes up as a more open contest and it may draw a larger field as a consequence. One newcomer that may be expected to bid for the 5,000 added event is the filly Dawn Play, winner of the Acorn and Coaching Club American Oaks, which has not been called upon to confront the colts this season. Had Reaping Reward won the Latonia Derby off by himself and come out of the race in sound condition trainer Max Hirsch might have thought better of the idea of sending the King Ranch filly after the American Derby, but now the situation is much too appealing. Considering that he had to race the final quarter of the Latonia Derby with a broken shoe, which undoubtedly caused him more trouble than did the injury suffered by War Admiral in the Belmont, Reaping Reward miistbe credited with a very fine effort. Without that accident the Milky Way colt may have been expected to have drawn away from the field much more than he did. His triumph was by a half length over the fast-closing Eagle Pass, which made up slightly more than two lengths on Reaping Reward in the final furlong. The latter could gain irmly a ngth on Flying Scot in the last quarter, but. apparently did it on his courage, as jockey Alfred. .Robertson reported that the colt acted as though he was in trouble through the stretch drive. Trainer Robert McGarvey must be. hopeful that the colts injuries will. heal, in time, for him to be made ready for the . .Classic, a race Mrs. Mars, being a Chicagoan, is very anxious to win. A good fiejd. .of. three-year-olds also went postward in the Shevlin Stakes, decided over the mile distance, at Aqueduct, but, as in the Latonia Derby, the favorite was unable to reward the public. Sceneshifter, with Fencing as a running mate, and the stable preference to win, was installed at odds-on by virtue of his effort in the Belmont Stakes, whicn brought him- second honors, but he could not rim down Rudie through the stretch after jockey Maurice Peters had : - - K, Continued on. .twenty-fifth page. HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF .Continued from second page. rated him along until well into the stretch. He apparently was waiting for Fencing, which lacked speed at all stages. When Sceneshifter did go after Rudie, moving up on the inside, Eddie Arcaro allowed William Gallaghers speedster to drift out from the inside and Peters was in a quandary for several moments. Then he guided the Maxwell Howard representative to the inside and the Sickle colt moved up fast in the last sixteenth, but the charge came too late. Arc ros handling generally had much to do with Rudies Shevlin victory. Sceneshifter will get another chance in the Dwyer, which will be run Saturday over the mile and a furlong course, and again he may be expected to rule the choice. The extra distance should be to his fancy and his rider very likely will not be called upon to worry about Fencing if the latter also goes post-ward. As in the Shevlin, the son of Sickle and Stagecraft will be entitled to plenty of allowances because he has yet to win a stake. Rudie also is a Dwyer candidate, and Gallagher and his thespian trainer, John Donovan, may decide to run him back, although the Reigh Count Daunt colt must take up 119 pounds, an advance of five over his Shevlin impost, and the Dwyer distance is more than he really fancies. The improving Strabo, Brooklyn, Melodist, Moonton and Grand Play are other members of the Shevlin field which also may try for Aqueducts most important test for three-year-olds. None of the other eligibles is likely to threaten. Many players throughout the country profited when their "hunch" parlay of Reaping Reward and Well Rewarded went over. Well Rewarded, which also is by Sickle and is from Hayai, by Delhi, may have been given that name by Mrs. Mars because of the success shes had with Reaping Reward. At any rate, the filly lived up to her monicker by her triumph in the Princess Pat Stakes, with its first money of 1,730. As far as owners were concerned, the finish of the Washington Park feature for juvenile lassies was the same as the Latonia Derby, with the Valdina Farms furnishing the second horse in Hermana, and John Hay Whitney the .hird in Inhale. The last-named speedster just wasnt able to cope with her two v-"stern rivals, which outran her from the beginning. The time of 1:11 for the six furlongs was very good for a two-year-old filly at this time of the season, and Well Rewarded must be considered one of the stronger candidates for the Arlington Lassie Stakes, her next important engagement.
