TRAINING FOR WASHINGTON FUTURITY AT AN END i READY FOR RICH RACE l Ten Starters Means Gross Value of About 0,000. Pharacase in Fast Trial Mountain Ridge Impresses Larger Crowd Than on Derby Day Expected. HOMEWOOD, 111., June 24. Their training over, some of the countrys leading juvenile prospects, possibly a future champion among them, this afternoon were taking it easy here at Washington Park, where on Saturday they will start in the rich Washington Park Futurity. Hard training for the young turf stars in preparation for Saturdays race, which will be decided over six furlongs, a trying distance for youngsters so early in the year, was brought to a close earlier today when several of the candidates were put through private workouts. They were Mrs. Ethel V. Mars Mountain Ridge, Warren Wrights Pharacase and the lone eastern invader, Cleveland Putnams Robber Bold. Previously such others of the expected starters as the probable favorite, Tiger, stable companion of Mountain Ridge; Hal Price Headleys powerful Kentucky combination of Bourbon King and Menow; Herbert M. Woolfs Joe Schenck; Emerson F. Woodwards Lassator and Diavolo Boy; Teddy Weed, another belonging to Warren Wright, and possibly one or two others whose status in connection with this race has not definitely been announced, had their final hard drills. Except for short speed tests tomorrow, all of the youngsters going to the post are ready. LAST TRAINING MOVES. Not to be outdone by the several others which have turned in sparkling, if not spectacular, trials - while priming for the Futurity, which will be worth almost 0,000 if ten start, Pharacase and Mountain Ridge greatly impressed as they went through their last exacting "preps" on a fast track this morning. Pharacase traveled five furlongs in :59, somewhat extended, while Mountain Ridge covered the six furlongs distance of the Futurity in 1:14, handily. Robber Bold was given a less arduous workout which saw him traverse four furlongs in :51, breezing. Neither Mountain Ridge nor Pharacase had the benefit of a pacemaker or work companion, and the latter rattled off the quarter mile in :23 and four furlongs in :47. Mountain Ridge, rated at an easier pace throughout his move, was timed in :24 for the quarter and in :49 for the half mile. Both colts were reported in good condition after having cooled out. The stable was due at Washington Park today. ,000 STARTING FEE. With only one or two exceptions, only youngsters of proven quality will get into the starting field. The ,000 starting fee is enough to scare out those who might be tempted to "shoot for the moon," but wih. the race grossing around 0,000 and the winners prize amounting to something like 2,000. the second, third and fourth awards of ,000, ,500 and ,500,. respectively, the field may include at least one or two whose chances of victory would hinge chiefly on racing- luck. The Washington Park Futurity in its first staging will be a western race with stables from this area dominating the field. The. powerful stables of two Chicagoans, Mrs Mars and Mr. Wright, generally are expected to fight it out with the starters of Mr. Headley of Kentucky and Mr. Woodward of Texas. Early consideration has the candidates divided into three classes, the entries of Mrs. Mars and the Headley establishment being favored by a majority. The Wright standard bearers, largely as the result of Phara cases fast trial this morning, seem to have the next largest following, though the Woodward hands does not want for admirers. Joe Schenck, Robber Bold, and any other participants were grouped as outsiders. .. A crowd rivaling that of Derby Day a week ago is expected to turn out for the final day of the Washington Parks season. Reservations are running ahead of any day but Derby Day and Decoration Day and this seems to presage a large attendance. -
