Dixie Handicap Winner of 1936 Among Recent Arrivals. One Dozen Stalls Bedded Down for String Trained by Selby Burch Treford Moves Up. WILMINGTON, Dela., June 24. Dark Hope, winner of the Dixie Handicap of 1936, in which he equalled the Pimlico track mark of 1:58 for the mile and three-sixteenths set in the Dixie of 1932 by Gallant Knight, is an arrival at Delaware Park with six or seven other horses, mostly home-bred, of the stable of J. W. Y. Martin, of Maryland. Dark Hope, beaten in the last Dixie by Calumet Dick, Finance, Aneroid and Count Arthur has come down to try his luck in the Sussex Handicap Inaugural, the Delaware Steeplechase and Race Associations 0,000 gallop of one mile and a quarter, for three-year-olds and over, set for July 17, and in which he may meet Calumet Dick and Aneroid again. Finance and Count Arthur are not eligible. He hasnt won since he licked Azu-car in the Francis Scott Key Handicap at Pimlico, but he is going well, and Louis Feustel, his trainer, the same who developed and handled Man o War in 1919 and 1920, predicts that he will be right for the Sussex. With him in the Martin string are the two-year-olds Sound Proof and Slow Motion and the four-year-old maiden Badge of Honor. Stalls have been bedded at Delaware Park for a dozen variously owned horses trained by Selby Burch, who has made few mistakes in Maryland and New York racing this season. The best of Burchs lot, perhaps, is Thomas H. Somervilles Treford, an imported son of Harford and Tresina that he has named for the Brandywine and Sussex handicaps, the Brandywine being a dash of one mile and a sixteenth for three-year-olds and over, programmed for July 3. SIMILAR CAREERS. There is a striking similarity between this TreforcTs career so far and the career of Thursday, Thursday being a son of Mars and Pretty Day, Burch got from Walter Jeffords some years back and sold to-R. A. Moore a year ago last winter after winning about 5,000 in purses with him. Thursday masqueraded in claimers for a couple of years, while the haltermen slumbered in ignorance of his merit They did not wake up until after he had won a couple of Riggs Memorial Handicaps and a Bryan and OHara Memorial, and become a Santa Anita Handicap possibility. Thursday hasnt been so hot since his transfer to the Moore stable, but he is still considerably better than an empty stall. Treford was "toiling in claimers most of last year, but he finished up at Bowie In November in class C handicaps and has climbed another rung of the ladder of class this spring. At Belmont Park not so long ago he licked Dark Hope, Thorson, Star Shadow, Moon Side and Fair Stein In a handicap of one mile and a sixteenth, and in 1:44, the same being pretty fair time at the deeply harrowed Belmont Park course of today. Other winners of this particular Burchs string are Jefferson Davis Cohns San Anti-oca, Mrs. Edward Friendlys Jacola and Edward Friendlys Hunting Home. San Antioca is a class C handicap horse and the others are very promising two-year-olds.
