PROFESSOR PAUL SCORES Qualifies for Engagement in 0,000 Added Frontier Handicap. Easily Defeats Dixianas Brendard in Main Event at Detroit Another Large Crowd Present. DETROIT, Mich., June 24. Professor Paul qualified handsomely for his Frontier Handicap engagement when he was an easy winneer of the Neds Auto Supply Company Handicap, principal race, offered as the sixth event at the Fair Grounds this afternoon. Dixianas Brendard was second and H. C. Hatchs Kandahar, a 6 to 5 choice, was third at the end of one mile and a sixteenth, which the winner ran in 1:46. The four-year-old Justice F. gelding toted 110 pounds, two less than the top weighted Sir Jim James, which ran fourth", and equal impost with Kandahar and Gyral. He was ridden by "Bobby" Montgomery and was held at odds of slightly better than 5 to 1. Brendard, although slightly off stride at the start, recovered quickly and led the small field of six into the back stretch, with Gyral and Kandahar closest in pursuit. Professor Paul was slowest in motion and he was a trailer until making the far turn, where Montgomery sent him after the leaders on the outside. Near the final quarter Critchfield drove Kandahar to the front, but the Hatch representative was unable to raw clear and Brendard, which was saving ground throughout, and the winner were lapped with him when they came to the final furlong. During the run to the wire Professor Paul showed his superiority and Brendard came again to beat Kandahar by a neck for second honors, but was more than a length back of Professor Paul at the end. FAVORITES IN ECLIPSE. A crowd nearly equalling that of the record week-day gathering present yesterday, witnessed the well-balanced program which was decided over a fast track. However, the patrons had a hard time in selecting the winners and most of them came from unexpected quarters. The fifth event which was for plater three-year-olds, maidens, and winners of one race, resulted in a mild surprise and another of the several thrilling finishes. Mrs. A. Reids Saxlen got up to beat Oddesa Farms Sweep Boy by half a length at the end of six furlongs. Tartarus, furnished by Dixiana, and j under the top impost of 120 pounds, was ; 1 third a nose back of Sweep Boy and a length 1 and a half before Kinross, which led the seven others to the end. A nose finish, a big surprise and the first victory of the meeting for Dorothy Hicks, came with the opening dash which attracted a limit field of lowly platers at six furlongs. Capitalist was second, a head before Servant ; Pride, which was much the best of the well L supported High Santa. Henrierva, the choice, was always far back and Kai Harri i bled when being pulled up. GUNWALE EASILY. Gunwale won his first race of the year when he carried T. D. Buhls colors to an easy victory in the second event at one mile and a sixteenth. Gibbys Choice, which reached the lead approaching the final quarter, was third, a length and a half back of Homer L. and a neck before High Flag, which garned fourth laurels after being used up in pacemaking. Shes Right showed a brilliant performance by accounting for the fourth race for better grade plater juveniles. She withstood Greenski at the end of five furlongs. Carrying Time, making his first start for Dixiana, was third, three parts of a length back of Greenski, which was beaten by a neck for major honors.
