C. V..WHITNEYS CRAVAT Easily Triumphs Over Smoke Signal in Maplewood Stakes. Heavily-Backed Favorite Fails Badly In Rockingham Feature of Tuesday Goodly Crowd in Attendance. SALEM, N. H., June 29. The hottest choice of the Rockingham meeting suffered defeat as Manhassett Stables Smoke Signal could do no better than second behind C. V. Whitneys Cravat in the ,500 added Maple-wood Stakes, five and a half furlongs juvenile event that featured todays card at Rockingham. The heavily-backed favorite was not even a close second, finishing a length and a half back of the winner and only a nose in front of Ryland H. News Grand Light. P. J. Dohertys Bow Tip turned in a good race in finishing fourth and should improve off the effort. The winner, ridden by Babe Hanford in flawless style, finished out in 1:06 flat to earn a purse of ,005. Bright and warm weather brought a crowd of 7,500 out for the sport. Sure Cloud began with his usual speed in the race and showed the way down the back stretch with Bow Tip in close attendance. Sure Cloud began to give way on the far turn and Grand Light came along fast to supplant him in the lead as they moved around that turn and into the stretch. FLOUNDERS FAR BACK. Meantime, the crowd that had backed Smoke Signal saw the horse floundering far back until they were ready to straighten out, where he moved up, but he was not moving in a manner that was very men-! acing. Once they were in the stretch, Han-! ford bore down on Cravat, and that racer I came up extremely fast. He looked strictly the horse to beat as they charged to the eighth post. Grand Light and the Whitney racer went past that marker necks apart and, approaching the sixteenth post, Cravat went to the front, drawing away from there to the finish. Grand Light tired in the final seventy yards and Smoke Signal swept up on the outside to get the decision for the place. Mrs. T. Marshalls Palan scored a surprise victory in the fifth event, finishing ! four lengths in advance of Ralph E. Fairs j Abaddon. Jimmy Logans Virnock, the favorite, was third, half a length back of the runner-up, and a neck in advance of I Myron. Seven went. j Palan set the early pace, but Prince Sador passed him on the back stretch and led to the far turn, where Palan came to the lead again and drew off through the stretch. Schieh was not forced to urge him in the final yards. Abaddon came up fast in the stretch to take second place. Virnocks race was a rather listless one. He had no excuses. The time was 1:45.
