Matt J. iWinn, one of Americas most colorful and I prominent racing figures, will reach the seventy-sixth milestone of his life Wednesday, hale and hearty. Colonel Winn, who is directly responsible for the advancement of the Kentucky Derby to the distinctive place it now holds in I American racing, will celebrate much in the j same manner as he has for the past decade, j at his desk here, receiving congratulations from every corner of the world. I Colonel Winn is more active than a great ; many men several years his junior and is ! at present working on plans for the im-: provement of facilities at Churchill Downs to handle the ever-increasing attendance for the annual running of the blue ribbon classic of the American turf. Colonel Winn is also active in the capacity of president of the American Turf Association and managing director of Lincoln Fields. Among his achievements is the improvement of the system of pari-mutuel betting, which is in vogue at all racing centers with the exception of the state of New York. Possessing an international knowledge of racing and the required vitality to work in the direction of the improvement of the ! thoroughbred sport has gained Colonel Winn j the widest acquaintance of any individual ! in racing in these United States.
