THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1938 MOUNTAIN RIDGE Bay colt, by Royal Minstrel Ethel Dear; owned by Milky Way Farm. Trained by R. McGarvey. By NORRIS ROYDEN i . . i In Mountain Ridge, the Milky Way Farm stable of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars has a worthy stablemate of Tiger, and while he wasnt quite as good a two-year-old as the latter, the son of Royal Minstrel and Ethel Dear, by Peter Pan, possibly may develop into the better three-year-old. At least he was held out of racing during the winter for a vacation, which certainly should prove beneficial. Asked to begin his career in May and going steadily throughout the summer and fall, Mountain Ridge climaxed his campaign by winning the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes when Tiger had to be withdrawn because of an injury. He captured two other races and was second seven times and third twice. In his three remaining starts, the Milky Way colt was fourth once in the Belmont Futurity and sixth in his first outing and in the Washington Futurity. Going against the best in his division throughout the season, Mountain Ridge performed in a fashion to indicate that he lacked but very little of being a champion. He may make up that difference this year, although his breeding suggests earlier development than the colts which usually fight it out for three-year-old honors. He was sired by Royal Minstrel, which so far has failed to get a son which could reach the top of the distance-running heap, although he has gotten numerous fast horses such as Singing Wood, First Minstrel, Melodist, War Minstrel and Mr. Bones. His dam is the good mare, Ethel Dear, which also produced New Deal, she being by Peter Pan, one of the best of all American sires, from a daughter of St. Amant. That Mountain Ridge will prove a capable middle distance runner is suggested, but his chances of proving first-class over championship routes are doubtful. After going unplaced in the Bashford Manor Stakes, won by his stablemate, Sky Larking, Mountain Ridge graduated at the next attempt, stepping five furlongs in :59 at Washington Park. Unable to keep up in the Washington Park Futurity, the Milky Way colt was narrowly beaten by Mad Money in a sprint of five and one-half furlongs at Arlington Park. The Le Mar colt again took a very close decision over Mountain Ridge in the Hyde Park Stakes over the same course. Encountering mud in the United States Hotel Stakes at Saratoga, Mountain Ridge weakened near the end of the six-furlong dash to lose by a head to Chaps, after which he was a respectable third to Spillway and Maetall m the Saratoga Sales Stakes. Then, in the Grand Union Hotel Stakes, the son of Royal Minstrel went gamely throughout to finish at the heels of Fighting Fox while outlasting The Chief and Regal Sun. In his preparation at Belmont Park for the Futurity, after having placed second to Redbreast, beaten a length while outgaming Chaps and Cant Wait, in the Babylon Handicap at Aqueduct, Mountain Ridge faltered in the late stages in an allowance affair taken by Specify, with Dauber third. A few days later he did much better by coming from behind to defeat Bourbon King by a neck in a dash of five and one-half furlongs, third place going to Nedayr. He was in the first flight throughout in the Futurity running, finishing evenly to gain fourth honors slightly more than four lengths back of Menow and well lapped on Tiger and Fighting Fox. After losing the Remsen Handicap at Jamaica by a length and a half to Bourbon King, with The Chief and Chaps among those behind him, Mountain Ridge again was the runner-up in an allowance race at Churchill Downs, Real Play proving the winner over a slow track. Then came the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, at one mile, in which he stood a long drive gamely to score by a neck over Kings Heir as Dah He was third. Under 122 pounds, he ran the mile in the comparatively good time of 1:38.
