CHAS.C.CAMPAirPASSESAWAY Veteran Racing Official Dies in Home at New Orleans Noted Figure in Two Sports. AURORA, 111., April 9 Word reached here yesterday of the death of Charles C. Campau, prominent racing official, in New Orleans. Campau succumbed to a one-day illness of pneumonia, after successfully combating ill health last January, which necessitated his temporary retirement from his duties as judge and clerk of scales at New Orleans Fair Grounds. The former officials associates, busy at Aurora at present, preparing for the twenty-four-day meeting opening here on May 2, learned that he was in the best of health and spirits a scant twenty-four hours before his death. Campau was a resident of New Orleans and is survived by his wife and two sisters. He was in his early seventies. DIAMOND STAR. Before associating with racing he had been one of baseballs old guard, playing on several top teams in the early eighties. Baseball suffered a loss when he turned his attention to the turf and in turn the turf has now lost a man that will be hard to replace. Campau was noted for his fairness, even temperament and knowledge of the sport. He numbered thousands of friends from coast to coast. For the past several years he had served as judge and clerk of scales at the Fair Grounds, Aurora, Fairmount, Bainbridge and Blue Bonnets. His place in the stand and at the scales at Aurora will be taken by Raleigh Leigh, son of racing secretary Dick Leigh, officials of the Fox Valley Jockey Club announced today.
