i NOTED TURF OFFICIAL DIES 1 PETER CLARK SAN MATEO, Calif., April 9. Peter Clark, one of the most beloved racing officials in the West, passed away this morning following a lengthy illness. The end came at St. Vincents Hospital, Los Angeles, where he has been confined since the latter part of the Santa Anita meeting. Judge Clarks demise was a shock to his friends, as reports from the South indicated that he was progressing favorably and he had been named as one of the stewards for the coming Tan-foran meeting, a position which he held last season. Clark was 69 years old and had been affiliated with racing since a boy. He began on the turf as an employee of the stable of Porter Ashe, and galloped horses for that famous trainer. Later he was employed by Daily Racing Form under the late Frank Brunell, and was one of the first of the chartmakers in the West. He continued in the employ of Daily Racing Form until he was appointed an official. He served as steward under William P. Kyne for many years and the present Bay Meadows meeting was the first that he has missed. NATIVE OF FRISCO. Clark was a native of San Francisco and numbered among his friends some of the citys most famous men of the last two score years. Phlebitis was given as the cause of his death. His remains will arrive from Los Angeles Sunday. Funeral arrangements have not as yet been completed. In commenting on Clarks passing, Bill Kyne said: "Peter Clark was one of the most conscientious men it has ever been my pleasure to be associated with. Not only was he an outstanding racing official, but he was thoroughly versed in all branches of the sport. In his day he had been an expert chartmaker and was thoroughly familiar with breeding lines. His passing leaves a gap in the turf world that will be hard to fill."
