FUTURITY, GOLD CUP AND GRAND NATIONAL TODAY g w - Juvenile Feature Attracts Twelve-War Admiral in Gold Cup Two-Year-Old Fixture Will Gross 7,855 With Dozen Starters Predict Prohibitive Odds Against War Admiral Weather Unsettled T r I NEW YORK, N. Y., Sept. 30. The Belmont Futurity, first race in history to i pay its winner more than 00,000, will be renewed today at Belmont Park, together i with The Jockey Club Gold Cup, the appearance of War Admiral, perhaps his final bow to racing, making that race as important as the juvenile feature. Twelve were named for the Futurity and four for the Gold Cup, the probable starters in both races being shown below, with post positions, weights, probable riders, owners and trainers: THE FUTURITY. i PP. No championship is at stake, hut the two-year-olds will strive for their richest purse tomorrow at Belmont Park in thev forty-ninth running of the Futurity. Its prospects none too encouraging several weeks ago, as El Chico stood well out in the division, the Futurity now promises one of its finest renewals with at least five of its dozen overnight candidates considered to have solid chancesjor victoiy. Co-featured with the straightaway dash of six and one-half furlongs to give New York what should be its most brilliant day of racing, are The Jockey Club Gold Cup and Grand National Steeplechase, but both of these events have drawn small, one-sided fields. Presence of unsettled weather also is depressing, but wet or dry, thefl track will be safe and a fast FugH running is expected. WithtH Chester Racing AssosiHdlPIBMIjH 5,000 to the Futurity, it will gross 7,855 should the overnight field remain complete, and of this sum the winner will receive 5,645. Only four, headed by War Admiral, whose odds probably will be the shortest yet quoted against him, have been named for the two-mile Gold Cup, giving it a gross value of ,600, of which the winner will get ,750 in addition to the ,500 trophy. Two of the three candidates for the three-mile Gi-and National are from the stable of Thomas Hitchcock, and the event has a total value of 1,250 with ,100 going to the victor. QUESTION OF TRACK. The question of the track condition may bring about a change in the Futurity odds because of the sensational effort from a speed standpoint of Porters Mite in winning the Champagne Stakes over a well-soaked course. W. E. Boeings colt may press Johnstown and Benefactor more closely for the post of starting favorite. More than probably the thrill of winning the Futurity will be a new one for the owner of the successful colt, as only two of the overnight candidates belong to persons fortunate enough to have witnessed their silks score previously. George D. Widener, who is seeking his third victory with Eight Thirty, has won the event with St. James, and the latters son, Jamestown, and he will Continued on thirty-fifth page. FUTURITY, GOLD CUP AND GRAND NATIONAL TODAY Continued from first page. derive some measure of satisfaction should William Woodwards Johnstown, the early favorite, lead home the field, as that colt is by Jamestown. Joseph E. Widener, whose Chance Sun won unexpectedly four years ago, will be represented by Omnibus, which did not enter into Futurity consideration until Thursday when he was victorious in a maiden event in the creditable time of 1:04 for the five and one-half furlongs over the straight course. Omnibus and the Good Time Stables Gallapol are two eligibles which have not been receiving much consideration, particularly in the case of the latter, since his decisive defeat by Johnstown on Tuesday. The only unexpected absentee from the Futurity field is Heather Broom, but the John Hay Whitney colt failed to qualify in a satsfactory manner, although lie had been trained for the engagement after his previous outing. WIDE OPEN RACE. Further evidence that the race is a wide open affair is to be found in the weights, which show that all of the candidates except Eight Thirty will be getting a three-pound allowance from scale impost, because of not having won two races of ,500 or one of ,000. The Widener colt will have up his 1 weight of 122 pounds for having captured the Christiana and Flash Stakes. Only a few of the candidates were "opened up" yesterday morning, and no remarkable speed was uncovered. Up the Creek went three furlongs in :36 on the main course, I which was equalled by Porters Mite on the training track, where Gallapol went the same distance in :37 and Olney a half mile in :49. War Admiral, beaten only once in the past two years and three times in his career, appears to have a "soft touch" in his Jockey Club Gold Cup engagement, in which he -vill shoulder only 124 pounds and carry hvel weight on the scale with his trio of tl-,ree-year-old opponents. Although making hh first start since winning the Saratoga Cup at a mile and three-quarters, the Glen Riqdle star has been preparing regularly for the Gold Cup, and his odds may be as short as 1 to 20, at which he was held in the Pimlico Special last fall. NO SERIOUS OPPOSITION. His opponents are Ogden Phipps Magic Hour, surprising winner of the Lawrence Realization, which will be coupled with the Wheatley Stables Quick Devil, which won a class "D" handicap, at a mile and one-half the other day, and Walter M. Jeffords Jolly Tar, a disappointing fourth in the Realization. Isolater had been mentioned for the race, but trainer James Fitzsimmons was not pleased with the manner in which he came out of his last workout. Annibal and Rioter, two of the better members of Thomas Hitchcocks outstanding band of jumpers, and F. Ambrose Clarks Birmingham are the sole candidates for the Grand National, and the entry is sure to be a short-priced favorite. Annibal is the top weight under 156 pounds, and probably will be ridden by Rigan McKinney,, while Rioters impost is 153 pounds. Birminghams record hasnt been so good, and his assignment is only 139 pounds.
