HUNTING HOME WINS AT 30-1 Milky Way Farm Entry Beaten at Odds-On in Special Race. Cold and Dreary Weather at Belmont Park Drizzling Rain Makes the Footing Sloppy for Sport. NEW YORK, N. Y., Sept. 30. Under the most disagreeable weather conditions, some excellent sport was offered at Belmont Park today and there were two marked upsets in the principal races. In the Valorous Purse, a mile and a sixteenth for three-year-olds, S. J. Paces Hunting Home, a 30 to 1 shot, was winner, while Gentle Savage, held at 7-10, finished next to last. Then in a purse confined to the lady owners, Mrs. Mars pair of No Competition and Giles County were badly beaten when at odds-on, while Lovely Night was winner. The day was cold and dreary with a drizzling rain falling that made the going sloppy, but it was good sport for the reason that the horses engaged were of a better quality than those that have marked the recent racing. In the Valorous Purse, John One, which races for Mrs. Ethel V. Mars Milky Way Farm stable, was the one to give Hunting Home a close battle and third went to Mae-fleet. TAKES LONG LEAD. From a good start, Robertson sent John One along at his best gait in an effort to make a runaway of the contest. He soon had the son of Man o War galloping along four lengths clear, and Be Quaint and Bar Fly headed the others, while Gentle Savage and Hunting Home brought up the rear. This was the order until heading for the stretch turn, where Hunting Home moved up on the outside until he had reached third place, but John One was still romping along in front with a clear lead, and Maeflcet was in second place. By this time Sammy Ren-ick was hard at work on Gentle Savage, but to no avail, and it was evident even then that he was beaten. It was not until inside the final furlong that John One began to tire, and there Robertson went to a drive. Hunting Home continued to gain and, while he was bearing out, he was over the line winner by a half length. John One had saved second place by three lengths, and Maefleet was a half length before Bar Fly when he took third. ARCARO DOUBLE. Eddie Arcaro completed a riding double when he scored with Idle Way in the six furlongs of the fourth. This was the Whimsical Handicap, confined to fillies and mares of class "D" in the graded handicaps and to score she caught the Howe Stables North Riding, with Marshall Fields Fleur du Mai finishing a distant third before Donna Leona. Fleur du Mai had closed some ground to be third, but she was four lengths back of North Riding to just beat Donna Leona a length. Gin Daisy was a disappointment of this when she was utterly lacking in speed and was outrun all the way. North Riding was favorite of the field.
