DUAL CICERO FEATURES . Hawthorne Speed and Hawthorne Handicaps Saturday Headliners. Speed Handicap Attracts Fourteen Eligibles and Hawthorne Handicap Twelve -Chance Ray in Both. CICERO, 111., Sept. 30. The seventh and eighth of Hawthornes ten stakes the Hawthorne Speed Handicap, at six furlongs, and the Hawthorne Handicap, at a mile and one-sixteenth will be presented here tomorrow as co-features on one of the best programs racing secretary J. G. Reeder has been able to assemble, Gold Cup Day excepted, since the meeting opened. Both stakes are for three-year-olds and upward, and each of them carries an added purse of ,500. The Hawthorne Speed Handicap drew a field of fourteen, among them winners of three previous stakes run at the local track. One is B. P. Woodsons hard-running Leading Article, which accounted for the John C. Schank Memorial Handicap here last Saturday. The other two Hawthorne stakes winners are C. E. Davisons Chance Ray, captor of the Presidents Trophy, and S. J. Norris Mr. Blaze, which took the Hawthorne Sprint Handicap. WELL MATCHED FIELD. The Hawthorne Handicap attracted an even dozen and, while the field is a well-matched one, no Hawthorne stakes winners are among them. Leading Article, among the most consistent racers in training, has been assigned top weight of 122 pounds for tomorrows task, and even under such a steadying burden is likely to rule the public choice. Besides Chance Ray and Mr. Blaze, others which may be found among Leading Articles opponents are Le Mar Stock Farms Mar Le and Mad Money, Rockhome Stables Dora May, Mrs. A. M. Creechs Shining Heels and Grey Streak, and Bert Friends Co-Sport. The latter is returning to competition after what may have been a beneficial rest. The Hawthorne Handicap will see P. L. Kelleys Cardinalis, runner-up to Esposa in the Hawthorne Gold Cup, under top weight of 115 pounds. Some of the others scheduled to get into action here are Mrs. G. H. Emicks Unselfish, Lawrence Barkers Sumatra III., Shady Brook Farms Visigoth, William Ma-loneys Her Reigh, Friedberg and Axtons Continued on thirty-fourth page. Chance Ray, made eligible for both stakes, is more likely to be found in the longer race, although Davison has announced no such decision at this time.
