CATECHISM BY TWO LENGTHS Easily Takes Measure of Briery and Ferdinand at Rockingham Park Rain and Inclement Weather. SALEM, N. H., Sept. 30. Catechism, racing in the colors of M. Stuart and ridden by Carroll Bierman, proved she is just about the best of the better than average two-year-olds racing in New England. The Questionnaire filly raced over the six furlongs of the Randolph, fifth and feature event of the off-day program in 1:13, to have a two-length advantage over her closest rival, Mrs. P. A. Shavjs Briery. Ferdinand was in third position, three lengths off the runner-up and only a nose to the good over B. N. Kanes "Little Rhody. Kate Smith, the early pacemaker, wound up sixth in the field of seven. Kate Smith, ridden by "Minute Man" Merrill, went to the front at the sound of the bell. She opened up a good margin over Ferdinand and Modern Youth in the run down the back stretch, but approaching the far turn the Black Servant filly began to choke up badly. Ferdinand pursued her determinedly, and just as he was to go to the front, Bierman took Catechism to the outside and she bounded to the front. After she had gained command it was all over but the shouting. She was mildly ridden out, but apparently needlessly as Briery was not gaining on her. Briery showed a good effort, but the filly proved conclusively that the son of By Pass II. is no match for her. The day was one of the most disagreeable during the meeting. A drizzling rain fell throughout the afternoon and a cold, high wind swept the course, making heavier outer garments a necessity.
