MARCHBANKS FAVORITE RACE 1 Likes to See Juveniles Develop 1 Boosts Lassie Stakes. Restricted to Fillies Bred in California I Blue Breeze Likely to Be the Publics Choice. SAN BRUNO, Calif., Nov. 24. John Marchbanks favorite race, the California Bred Lassie Stakes, is down for decision at -the Walnut Creek Breeders Tanforan horse I , park Saturday afternoon. Home-bred fillies, . to the number of about ten, will battle it out i for the ,000 added prize and the winners share of the purse, including all starting and nomination fees, should be in the vicinity of ,500. Such a purse is not to be sneezed at in any mans league and the fillies prepared to take a shot at it will probably never again figure seriously in any stake of like value. Some fillies that could possibly have won the race, such as Dear Diary, were not nominated, so it leaves Blue Breeze, a sprinting miss, from the Janss stable, as the probable choice. Among those likely to line up against Blue Breeze are William Le Barons Green Jade, John McKeons Mintouri, Charles E. Coopers Lovely Bells and Bon Veille, Grayson Phil-pots Pinkus, D. J. Metzgers Sweet Jasmine, Dr. L. H. Applebys Vade Retra, Henry P. Russells Titicaca and Temperament, and Mrs. F. J. Lewis Marguerite L. Blue Breeze is by Blue Larkspur, one of the best horses ever owned by Col. E. R. Bradley, who has supplied four Kentucky Derby winners. Her dam was mated to Blue Larkspur in Kentucky and the mare was shipped west to foal Blue Breeze in California. We state that the Lassie Stakes is John Marchbanks favorite race because it is one of the three topline events for home-bred two-year-olds held annually in California. The two-year-olds are the apple of March-banks eye. He enjoys watching their development. We do not believe we are far wrong when we say that Marchbank gets more of a "wallop" out of the Lassie Stakes than he does out of the running of the Marchbank Handicap. PREVIOUS LASSIE WINNERS. Previous winners of the Lassie Stakes have been Maid of Perth, owned by Mr. March-bank, and Sharp Girl and Sky Lanty. Sharp Girl created an upset by beating the fine sprinter Brown Jade two years ago. While the Lassie Stakes is primarily of interest to breeders, we have at hand a few items which may interest them also. We are informed that Harry Sharpe, former stud master for the National Stud of Ireland, has heard from a friend in England to the effect that few good horses are available in the tight little isle at present. They have very few good producing sires and have had too much breeding to the Phalaris line. Of the other "houses," Son-in-Laws stock is reported to be slow in maturing and Bland-fords stock non-stayers. Sharp-has the following to say of the breeding situation:" "What is required is a strong infusion of Hampton, Isonomy and Carbine blood. Where to find it- is a problem, as they have been crowded out by Ben DOr and St. Simon fashion in England and the Domino in America." It is interesting to note that Marcus Au-relius, the sire of Euripides, two-time winner at Tanforan, cost 0,000 at the Newmarket yearling sales in England. Owing to his bad temper, he was sold cheaply to a Calgary, Canada, sportsman, who raised horses for the Royal Northwest Mounted Police. Euripides just missed chasing bad Eskimos over the northern wastes.
