HANKE SHOWS RIDING PROMISE Youth Born in Germany Under Wing of Frank Lettellier First Winner in September. NEW ORLEANS, La., Nov. 24 Although most horsemen have a penchant for developing young riding talent, Frank P. Letellier, New Orleans turfman, has not been included among them. However, his eye was caught by a youngster in the early fall, and he has taken the lad under his wing and is of the opinion that the new prospect will blossom into a top-notch reinsman. The youngster who attracted the attention of the veteran Crescent City owner and trainer is Eddie Hanke, a native of Hamburg, Germany, but for the past eight years a resident of Chicago. Hanke is here with the Letellier stable, which was brought in recently, and is .scheduled to do most of the lightweight riding for the establishment during the Louisiana Jockey Club meeting. After having the experience of riding in eight races, Hanke graduated from the maiden ranks at Latonia during the fall meeting on September 12, and made an excellent ride to get his mount down in front, all of which has strengthened Letelliers belief in the youngsters prospects. Hanke tips the scales at 100 pounds and had two years experience in exercising horses before he was permitted to ride in a race and the young Teutons purchase on a horse and the manner in which he handles himself gives evidence of his long rudimentary training. It has been the practice of Letellier to select the heavier and more seasoned jockeys to pilot his horses, as he believed that they are more capable of handling horses and are smarter in general, but the actions of Hanke has changed the opinion, at least for the time being.
