SMITH AND HAWKS SEPARATE Former Bradley Jockey Resigns Post as Trainer Intends to Take Short Vacation. ARCADIA, Calif., Nov. 30. Jimmy Smith, former jockey for Col. E. R. Bradley, who branched out as a trainer in 1935, has severed his connection with the establishment of Howard Hawks. Smiths success as a conditioner has attracted nationwide attention, so much so that he- has been offered several positions since it became known that he is retiring from the Hawks stable, and it is likely he will be affiliated with one of Americas leading stables before long. Smiths efforts since entering the training ranks have been marked with success. His skill in bringing a horse out of retirement and winning with it the first time out some time ago, stamped him as a trainer of merit. He has never had a horse which has not won under his direction, which is the best recommendation any horseman can have. Smith plans to take a short vacation before settling into a new berth and will probably take a brief sojourn in Old Mexico. Bill Hurley, veteran trainer in charge of the E. R. Bradley stable, gave Smith his tutoring in the art of conditioning horses.
