TANF0RAN TURF NOTES Ace Hudkins, the former fighter, believes he has one of the best and most consistent horses of his age in the veteran sprinter, Flag Bearer. The son of Porte Drapeau, now twelve years old, is seldom out of the money, and can run on a fast, slow or muddy track. Jockey Johnny Longden, Americas leading rider, was blinded by flying mud while riding Deer Fly in the seventh race Tuesday, and cancelled his engagement in the concluding event on that day. He returned to the saddle Wednesday. B. Fels, contract rider for A. Schwartz, made his first appearance at Tanforan Wednesday. Fels arrived from the East about a week ago. Leonard Scott, an apprentice under contract to C. S. Howard, accepted his first mount Wednesday. Heine Kersten, well-known jockeys valet, is confined to his hotel with an attack of the flu. Sun Portland, which appeared lame after pulling up in his last race, walked out of his lameness and upon examination will be permitted to start in the Santa Clara Handicap . Thursday. Earl Beezley reports that he has placed the former good handicap horse, Sobriety, back in training. The animal has been out of competition for almost a year. Grayson Philpot shipped Dogaway, Alex the Great, Red Corn, His West, Home Loan, Mar Pal, Blue Breeze, Pinkus, Petro and Patsy Ellen to Santa Anita Wednesday. He left Katya and Suddenly at Tanforan in the care of his brother, Hurst Philpot. J. Mighinasso has registered the three-year-old gelding, Crystal Chief. J. Merritt is the trainer.
