BUYS FILLY SMART CRACK E. E. Fogelson Secures Brilliant Young Racer for Campaign at Santa Anita Park. LOS ANGELES, Calif., Nov. 30. The brilliant juvenile filly, Smart Crack, which won her first six starts, has been sold by T. P. Morgan, Texas oil man and sportsman, to Col. E. E. Fogelson of Dallas, it was learned here today. Smart Crack will be nominated for the 0,000 Santa Anita Derby and other three-year-old specials at the Arcadia track. The sprightly filly, a gray daughter of Kiev Wisecrack, by Vulcain, was bred by W. T. Anderson. Entered to be claimed for ,500, she -started her racing career in a five furlongs race over a sloppy track last June 27 at Aqueduct, when she fairly ran away from the field, which included Pontius, Persuasive and Gridiron. In her next outing Smart Crack defeated Cristalina, Slave Charm and others in an allowance affair at Empire City. Smart Cracks third start took place at Narragansett, where she took down a stakes event, defeating Heather Time, White Plumage, Sweet Nancy and others of the best juveniles in New England. She then returned to Aqueduct for her fourth straight win, handily beating Scandalous and She Did, among others. Following a let-up for five weeks, trainer E. L. Snyder then started Smart Crack twice in succession at Jamaica and she won both races with speed in reserve, humbling, among others, such outstanding two-year-olds as Inscoelda, Unerring, Matterhorn and Red Eye. FIRST REVERSE. The until-then beaten filly finally suffered a reverse. It took place at Empire City on October 29 in the Autumn Day Stakes. The distance was five and three-quarters furlongs and the track was deep in mud. A 9 to 20 favorite in the wagering, Smart Crack seemed far the best as the race was run. She stole away to a long lead, but was permitted by jockey Woolf to swing very wide at the stretch, which enabled Ciencia, with Yarberry up, to steal through on the rail and enjoy a half-length lead as the field straightened up in the stretch. Smart Crack came again when Woolf got her back on the desired course and she quickly cut down the lead of the winner from there to the wire, losing by only a head. That was the brilliant fillys last siart. She was given a much deserved rest and will be fresh and fit for the three-year-old specials at Santa Anita, where the Fogelson string will be campaigned. Fogelson has Dauber, winner of the Preakness Stakes, in his stable, along with several other top class thoroughbreds. It was Fogelson who gained nation-wide attention last year by accumulating an "all-gray" stable. He collected upwards of ten "ghost racers" and the color was adhered to until the opportunity came to purchase the bay Dauber. Now Smart Crack is another gray addition to the band of silver-hued racers.
