t CHARLES TOWN TURF NOTES s and William Hamilton, who is serving as starter here, has the following ground assistants on his staff: They are Carl Burns, R. J. "Rubie" White, C. Phillips, H. McGinnis, L. Pierce and S. Kennedy. The work of the veteran starter here has been complimented upon. Donald Hay, who is in charge of the mutuel department at Charles Town, has been appointed to a similar capacity for the Hollywood Jockey Club in Florida. Hay has been informed that the scheduled opening may be advanced to January 18 instead of January 11. Buck Shlosser, calculator on many of the leading tracks of the country, was present for the racing at Charles Town Saturday. The horse colony at Charles Town was increased by the arrival of the C. Pardue stable that came from Louisville, Ky. Another shipment coming from the same sector was the horses that race for C. Walker who brought the platers Pierre Andre and Blon-dish. The useful sprinter Proteus, owned by 1-. H. McDonald, was incapacitated Saturday morning when the gelding bolted through the fence during work hours suffering surface injuries. Listed to start in the second race owner McDonald was granted permission to cancel the engagement. Jockey C. Payne, who rode at Wheeling Downs and other tracks during the summer, came here to join the local riding colony. Tommy Sullivan reached here from Montreal, Canada, with the platers Moonburn and Hi Ben. The latter performs for William Zakcor who has several other horses on the grounds. Beverly Broun, chairman of the West Virginia Racing Commission and Mrs. Iva B. Foster, secretary, arrived late Saturday evening. The riding brigade was swelled by the arrival of jockey C. Beasy, who came from Louisville, Ky. John Bosley, who has a useful stable of horses racing here, was taken sick and is confined to his quarters. Jockey Raymond Workman, who is visiting here, stated that he will leave for California, December 15 to report to trainer W. J. Norton who is preparing the horses of J. H. Whitney at Santa Anita Park. A. R. Winters who was elected to the West Virginia senate during the recent election, is serving on the official staff here. Winters has been connected with the local track for several years. The plater Hail America, which suffered a broken ankle in the running of the first race here Friday, was humanely destroyed following the accident.
