Unable to Figure Out Winters Plans of California Owner for His Handicap Champion. SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Dec. 3. Figure out the Howard stables intentions with Sea-biscuit and the racing secretarys office will give you a prize. To confound the gents who make up the races and level horses by applying lead pads Seabiscuit is reported here to have ducked out of Maryland yesterday and bobbed up in of all places Columbia, South Carolina. Seabiscuits postoffice address for an indefinite period twas indicated, will be Columbia. What does that mean? It has the racing departments up and down the coast guessing. Will he remain at Columbia to freshen up and then hop across the country or is he just making the hop and skip on the way down to Florida? Is another match race in prospect? With War Admiral sort of a return engagement? Or a three cornered affair with Lawrin, or even Stagehand? One cant blame Seabiscuit for getting out of the breezes around Bowie where ice and snow caused the management to abandon the schedule. He couldnt live there in comfort. Horses were scattering from Bowie and it was no place to remain there in the lonely forest. Living at Bowie in winter is like camping out on the shores of Hudson Bay. GOOD TRAINING QUARTERS. But why Columbia? For one reason there are grand training quarters at Columbia. W. F. "Fatty" Anderson went in there three years ago and Clarence Buxton likewise established a training camp all his own. Columbia boasts a fine mile track ample quarters fairly sunny weather and many social pleasures. The elite from the eastern seaboard congregate around Aiken and Columbia to go to the hounds to jump oer the hedges and indulge in various pleasures wherein the thoroughbred horse plays a major role. There are fine resorts gorgeous private estates. The Vanderbilts and the Whitneys and all the big shots from New York are wont to gather there. The track in South Carolina has housed many a famous horse. Sun Beau freshened up there before his western tour and prep- ped there once again for the drhre that made him the worlds leading money winner. Cavalcade legged up at Columbia prior to his excursion to the coast. Horses from Columbia in years past have frequently migrated to the Pacific Coast and started right off the cars. Seabiscuits present prank nonetheless leaves the coast experts in quite a dither. They dont know whether hes coming or going. Principal opinion points to Seabiscuit resting in Columbia until the weights appear for three major stakes the 0,000 San Francisco Handicap the 0,000 Wide-ner in Florida and the 00,000 Santa Anita. EXPECT WEIGHT SOON. The San Francisco Handicap, Tanforans classic, closes December 10. Weights for the Santa Anita are not far off. Santa Anita stakes close this week Thursday weights appear December 15 two days before the running of the San Francisco Handicap. The San Francisco Handicap will be no soft spot. At the moment training stunts on the coast indicate a grand field for the San Francisco. Louis B. Mayers stable has at least three heading toward the event. Main Man, which continues to maintain marvelous form takes his regular works. Today it was a three-quarter work in-1:21, breezing. Pinkie Grimes seemed very interested. Some say that Main Man doesnt like slop. Those who saw the slop splashing of the good horse today are inclined to think the eastern advisers are wrong again. Main Man seemed to relish the going. Ossabaw ex-jumper has joined Main Man here. They dont work together for Main Man needs slow routers while Ossabaw requires sharpeners for speed to get him out of his lumbering jumping ways. Hes responding splendidly. Ligaroti is at the height of form and a sure starter, mud or dry. Whichcee and Indian Broom are supposed to be pointing in the South. Also No Dice. Then there are all of those Waters South Americans heading straight toward San Francisco. Something from this lot will start.
