NAMING YEARLINGS DIFFICULT Large Number of "Baby" Racers Must Be Christened Every Year Owners Pondering. NEW ORLEANS, La., Dec. 3. The process of naming the coming two-year-olds of 1939 is now at its height and owners of the crop of 117 "babies" stabled at the Fair Grounds and Jefferson Park at present are pondering over the selection of suitable "tags" that will be accepted by the registrar of The Jockey Club. Finding acceptable monickers is a far more difficult problem than the casual racegoer realizes. Often twenty or more names are submitted before The Jockey Club grants the name for a thoroughbred, hence the matter of submitting names usually begins early in December, and at times the process is not cleared up until after the time rolls around for the youngsters to begin their racing careers. The large stables often encounter difficulties in selecting names for the newcomers due to the fact that there is such a large number of horses to be named each year. Only a small percentage of the yearling crop in New Orleans this winter have been named, but before the first event for two-year-olds of next year is offered on January 3 there will be a sufficient number of this band with names and schooled well enough to engage in the opening quarter-mile dash.
