j PREAKNESS ELIGIBLES One Hundred and Nine Still Remain El Chico Absentee. Ziegler Star Can Be Named for Rich Three -Year -Old Fixture by Supplementary Fee Clause. j BALTIMORE, Md., Dec. 3. The Preakness of 1939, which originally closed for entries on July 15, 1937 with a total of 322 nominations, has narrowed down to a list of 109 thoroughbreds including the outstanding two-year-old performers of 1938. William Boeings Porters Mite, winner of the Belmont Futurity and considered the most promising juvenile of the year, is the leading eligible. With him are W. L. William Zieglers El Chico, rated by many as the leading two-year-old of the season just closed, is the most notable absentee in the long list of good horses. However, a provision of the race permits supplementary entries by next April 15 and it is a certainty that theZiegler colt will be named for the Pimlico classic if he develops the three-year-old form expected of him. RENEWAL ON MAY 13th. With the lure of approximately 0,000 in gross value added to the mantle of tradition which surrounds the Preakness Stakes, the sixty-eight-year-old Maryland Jockey Club spring classic comes up for its forty-ninth renewal on May 13. The Preakness is now known as Americas richest race for three-year-olds. Many of the eligibles have been moved to Florida and California where they have been named for the rich and important early season three-year-old events. These tests will determine whether or not they are of real Preakness calibre. Others have been turned out for the winter months and will not be seen under colors until, next spring while the next four months will see the names of a dozen or so three-year-olds mentioned as possible supplementary entries.
