U. S. ARMY REPORTED WHOLLY UNPREPARED "Americas small army eighteenth in size in the world is wholly unequipped with modern weapons to defend the nation should it be attacked," Assistant Secretary of War Johnson warned today. Johnson, painting a gloomy picture of the nations military un-preparedness before automobile and equipment executives here, declared: "America must wake up to its military needs. Perpetual turmoil, revolution and counter-revolution, intolerance, jealousy, greed, hate, lust, revenge, imperialistic design and selfish ambitions today run rampant. The promise of the peace of twenty years ago now has taken on the appearance of a disappointing mirage of despair. Rudely awakened from a false sense of security by the shocking events of the last few years, the time has come to gird our loins. Today more than ever we must realize that adequate national defense is the most certain guarantee of the freedom of our institutions and of our way of life."
