; i ; j OLD AGE HALTS THEM ALL Gold Step and Flag Bearer Still Trying to Pay Their Way Made Brilliant Records. NEW ORLEANS, La., Dec. 3. As in ail branches of sport, the mighty must fall when age piles up, slipping a notch lower as the years roll by. Two of the oldest active campaigners engaged in racing at present are among those listed on the registration books of the Louisiana Jockey Club this season. Gold Step, now eleven years old, is among the fourteen horses William A. Mikcl has here this winter, and Leros, which has reached the ripe age of ten, is munching hay in the stable of Woodcock and King. During the lengthy careers of these two Stalwarts, Gold Step has been to the races 178 times, winning forty-five races, and on some occasions taking the measure of some topnotchers in all sections of the country, earning a total of 3,975, a tidy sum for any racer to annex. Leros has been to the wars 161 times, in-ishing on the front end of the procession forty-two times, gleaning 9,382 for the various owners for which he has performed. Leros began his racing career for Johnson N. Camden, who bred the gelding, but after leaving the Camden shelter, has flaunted the silks of more than a dozen other owners. Leros has not been to the races as yet this winter, but the veteran is likely to get his opportunity to strut his stuff before the Louisiana Jockey Clubs meeting is long under way. Gold Step has performed a number of times this year but has been unable to grace the winners circle. Another old timer still trying to earn his keep is Flag Bearer, a twelvc-vear-old in the stable of the former middleweight champion, Ace Hudkins, out at Tanforan on the Pacific Coast. During his career, Flag Bearer participated in 214 races, winning fifty-eight of these and taking down 7,453 in purse monies.
