TEA MERCHANT took the lead at once and, showing good speed to the stretch, bore out on MARGUERITE L. when the latter challenged in the last eighth to seriously interfere with her and went on to win under urging. MARGUERITE L., closest to the early pace, met interference from the winner. SHASTA FITZ had no mishaps and tired in the stretch. SHASTA REY was in close quarters on the inside early and closed a gap. SCHOOL BROOM showed early speed. INDIAN DREAM acted badly at the post and started from the outside. GRASSINGTON quit. MUCKER raced forwardly and held on fairly well. EL PORTAL lacked early speed, was in close quarters on the far turn and came fast in the middle of the track when too late. BURSTON MANOR tired. STAR STEPPER moved up steadily on the outside after going half the distance and, although forced wide on the stretch turn, took the lead, but was doing his best at the end to hold SHASTA KLICK. The latter continued gamely after being overtaken by the winner. MASTER JEAN was in close quarters repeatedly. HOLLYWOOD ZAR moved up gamely on the back stretch, but tired after taking a good lead. MERCED tired after being in close quarters on the stretch turn. GREEN JADE was also in close quarters and tired after racing into contention. ALASKAN moved up fast through the stretch and, under strong riding, wore down CLARCAROLE in the last eighth, winning in the closing strides. The latter saved ground on the stretch turn, took command when SOUTHERN BELLE raced wide and finished well. SOUTHERN BELLE made the pace, but lost her chance by going wide on the stretch turn.
