BILL FARNSWORTH TRIUMPHS Scores in Decisive Fashion Over Entracte at New York Course. Jamaica Covered by Light Mud and With Threatening Skies Prevailing Polydor Handicap Feature of Day. NEW YORK, N. Y., April 19. Bill Farns-worth, a good stake winner of other seasons, came back to the races under the banner of Mrs. George C. Winfrey to register in decisive fashion over the odds-on choice, Entracte, in the Polydor Handicap, feature of another dismal afternoons program at the Jamaica grounds today. It was his fourth start for that owner, and the fashion in which he packed 121 pounds to victory indicated she had purchased well. At the end the six-year-old son of Crack Brigade Princess Nora was four lengths in advance of Entracte, with Grey Gold another five lengths away, beating Double Back, the only other starter, by four lengths. Over a track covered by light mud and under threatening skies, the bay gelding traveled the distance in 1:13, three-fifths of a second slower than Sea Captains time in the previous dash. He was a receding second choice in the market, closing at 16 to 5 after opening at 11 to 5. Balaski got Bill Farnsworth off swiftly, but his charge gave way to Entracte when Wright hurried the latter through on the inside to gain a clear lead going into the far turn. The three-year-old could not shake off his older rival making the turn, and at the top of the stretch the equine Farnsworth came past the Stimulus colt to put him away after a short, sharp struggle. In the last sixteenth, he was going away. CREDITABLE PERFORMANCE. Entracte, conceding seven pounds on the scale to the winner, showed a creditable performance in his seasons debut. He had the speed which marked his best races of last season and showed his wonted liking for the mud, only faltering in the closing sixteenth of a mile. Grey Gold and Double Back never were serious factors. The first named wants a longer distance, and the other, weaker opposition. Landlubber, backed from a high of 12 to 1, down to 6 to 1 at post time, proved the best mudder of the class "C" horses in the Malvern Handicap, at a mile and a sixteenth. There the son of Strolling Player Rough Sea, ridden with much confidence by Snyder, drove past the judges a length and a half in advance of the pacemaking Encore, with Be Quaint another two lengths away. The colorbearer of the Bristol Stable was doing his utmost as he completed the trip in 1:49. Snyder had Landlubber in third place for the greater part of the trip and under a steadying hold for three-quarters of a mile. A sixteenth from the finish, the Bristol Stable colt headed the pacemaker and then, in the short duel which followed, drew away from that fellow. Possibly the seasoning gained in the winter won for him. ENCORE DISAPPOINTS. Encore, making his first start of 1939, was the second consecutive odds-on favorite to take a licking. The Polymelian colt, a 9 to 10 post favorite, after opening at 7 to 5, had the early speed of the party, tossing mud at his rivals for the first seven furlongs. Wright was hard at him thereafter with whip, hand and heel, but to no avail. The Polymelian colt probably will show better next time out. Old Sandy Bill, that races for Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs, became the first two-time winner of the meeting when he made a show of the platers that opposed him in the opening dash at six furlongs and, incidentally, it stretched his winning streak to eight races. The nine-year-old son of Wise Counsellor and Sweet Mary was brought back to the races just a year ago, after having been out of competition all through 1937, by reason of his infirmities. That Hirsch Jacobs made a good job of bringing him back is evidenced by the fact he has not been beaten since. J. S. Rileys Soigne finished in second place, but she was four lengths back of the winner and doing her best to save the place from Free Child by a scant length, and Jims Niece was a distant fourth. EQUESTRIAN NARROWLY. - Equestrian, a three-year-old son of Equipoise and Frilette, that races for R. E. Klee-bergs King Ranch, earned a close decision in the second. This was a six furlongs dash for colts and geldings of that age, and it took the camera to determine that he had won over Nelson I. Asiels Pontius, while Black Legion, from the Wheatley Stable, was a close third, well before Pharo Warrior. Equestrian went to the post a 9-to-5 favorite. There was some delay at the post, for which Pharo Warrior was to blame, and in one of his lunges he knocked a trackman down and injured him slightly. He was banished to the outside, where he broke well back of the field. Pontius was first from the stalls, but he gave way almost at once to Hello Stranger, which was rushed along until three lengths clear. Black Legion was soon racing in second place, but he was climbing badly and not making up ground in the early racing. Pontius was well back of these and he had met with some early interference, while Pharo Warrior, after being away last of the lot, was being rushed up on the outside by Renick. FORCED TO GO WIDE. Hello Stranger was all through before the stretch was reached and as he tired Pontius found his way through, and Black Legion settled down and was racing close in the contention. Equestrian was back of these and was forced to go wide when Hello Stranger had carried the other two out on the stretch turn. In the final furlong, Pontius was holding Black Legion safe and it was only in the last stride that Equestrian was along to earn a decision over the pair of them. 1
