HANFORD TO RIDE TECHNICIAN Woolf and Jones Virtually Agreed on Insco Colts Pilot. Coucci Will Probably Ride Xalapa Clown In Big Special at Churchill Downs on May G. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 19. Silvio Coucci, experienced New York jockey, and Ira Han-ford, Omaha boy, are the latest riders to virtually close negotiations for mounts in the sixty-fifth Kentucky Derby to be run at ! Churchill Downs here on May 6. Ben A. Jones, trainer of Herbert M. Woolf s Technician, one of the Derby choices, indicated here today that he and owner Woolf had just about settled on Hanford as pilot for that crack three-year-old in the Kentucky fixture. Hanford was astride Technician when that son of Insco and Glister raced home in front in the Flamingo Stakes at Hialeah Park. Jones and Woolf came to a conclusion that it would be hard to improve on the expert manner in which the Nebraska boy handled the Kansas City candidate on that occasion. Coucci is to have the leg up on Xalapa I Clown, another winter campaigned Derby hopeful and ace three-year-old in the stable j of Mrs. Bessie Franzheim. A. C. Dettwiler, trainer of the Franzheim horses, selected the New York Italian before leaving Santa Anita and a call taken on Silvio at the time will be exercised, Dettwiler stated this afternoon. HANFORDS DISTINCTION. Coucci has never previously ridden the son of Eternal and Loma Linda, Nick Wall having been astride him when he finished second in the Santa Anita Derby. Hanford has the distinction of having been the only rider in the history of the Derby to win the race while an apprentice. In his novice year 1936 he accomplished this feat with a powerful ride on M. L. Schwartz Bold Venture and that horse was the longest priced Derby winner since Exterminator won in 1918. Coucci has ridden in the race, but has never won it. Among other jockeys having Derby mounts are Wall, who will be astride El Chico, George Seabo, who is to ride Challedon, Johnny Adams, who will guide Porters Mite, I James Stout, slated for duty aboard Johns-I town, Eddie Arcaro who will be seen on one of the Greentree Stable starters most likely of which at this time are Hash and Third Degree, Lee Hardy who will direct Ariel Toy, Earl Steffen who is to ride Viscounty and Alfred Robertson and Herbert Lindberg, who are to have mounts on representatives of the Milky Way Farm. FALLON MAY RIDE IMPOUND. There has been no official announcement as to what rider will be in the saddle on Impound, but it might le Leo Fallon, and definite arrangements for several other probable Derby starters have not been made. Charles Kurtsinger is tentatively engaged for Light-spur, although this colt may decline the Derby call in which event the blond Ken-tuckian probably would shift to one of the candidates of J. C. Milam who has named Opelika and Decatur. Besides Hanford, other jockeys in this group who have had winning Derby mounts are Kurtsinger, who won the race with Twenty Grand in 1931, and also War Admiral in 1937, and Arcaro, who guided Lawrin to victory last year. Some of the possible Derby starters for which riders have not yet been officially announced are Our Mat, stablemate of El Chico; Equestrian, Steel Heels and Lostagal. 1
