MEADES STATUS IN KENTUCKY Doubtful if He Will Receive License Should He Apply Illinois May Also Deny Him. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 19. Whether Don Meade will be reinstated in Kentucky will not be determined until he makes a formal application for a license, but it was learned from an authoritative source that the state racing commission at this time is not pleased with the action of the Florida and New York turf governing bodies, which restored him to good standing. This reported attitude of the Kentucky commission rather precludes a chance of -his being able to ride in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 6, although several stables are said to have considered him for Derby mounts. Formerly connected with the stable of Edward R. Bradley, Meade is best remembered in Kentucky for his ride on that owners Brokers Tip in the Derby of 1933, in which the Bradley horse beat Head Play by a nose. Meade and Herb Fisher, who rode the runner-up, drew long suspensions for engaging in foul tactics during the stretch run. From an eastern source it was learned that Meade would not apply for a license in Kentucky and that he also would avoid at least another state, Illinois, the racing commission of which is understood not to be ready to welcome back the South Dakota boy. A confidential order, said to have been issued by the Kentucky racing commission following its annual spring meeting at Lexington last week, requests Meade to make application to that body instead of to the approved stewards of any Kentucky track, the commission holding that it only has the power to reinstate a rider.
