Start poor and slow. Won driving; second and third the same. CANTWELL broke in motion and drew away into a safe lead, saved ground all the way and then outlasted PHARA FROST in the final drive. The latter improved her position rounding the stretch turn, moved up on the outside under pressure and then finished fast. STATE WITNESS was a forward factor from the start and had no mishaps in the running. MR. DEINS finished well at the end. MAETAKE raced well throuihoiit. DEP.ROCHE lacked speed. SALAVINA raced extremely wide entering the stretch. NOBLE SCOT had a flash of early speed. TESOR MIA broke sluggishly. EASE M-UP was outrun throughout. AT POST— 1 minute. Start pood and slow. Won easily : second and third driving. BROWN PRINCE III. jumped well and showed high speed on the flat, drew away into an easy lead and had speed in reserve at the finish. KINGSEM, a forward factor from the start, responded to pressure in the stretch run and outlasted CODY in the final drive. The latter was moving up fast nearing the sixth and final fence when he made a bad landing and nearly unseated rider. LANDLUBBER was never a serious factor at any stage of the running. EMMAS PET jumped greenly and was outrun all the way FROCKS PARADE lost rider at the sixth fence. QUAKERSTREET lost rider at the fourth fence and AMALFI jumped the wing, bolting the course at the first fence. He was later brought in and schooled far back over the course. OLD RIVER broke fast and showed speed throughout, was in extremely close quarters from the quarter post to the eighth post and thert outlasted ABOYNE in the final drive. The latter moved up fast on the outside after the break, bore over sharply on the winner passing the quarter post and then faltered at the finish. SPANISH DUKE ran in spots and then closed gamely at the end. STEEP was outrun in the early stages, but failed to make up ground under pressure at the end. DURABLE raced greenly and was sent up on the outside of the leaders at the finish. TENUOUS was outrun from the start. FOURTH RACE 6 1-2 FURLONGS. Gold Flag, Sept. 8, 1938— 1:16%—1— 104. SCANDALOUS improved her position steadily in the stretch and finished with determination. CHING-LING raced well all the way and had no mishaps in the running. SHE DID was in close quarters on the far turn and finished well. OUTDONE was in close quarters rounding the far turn and failed to improve position thereafter. ESCALADE was shuffled back after the break and was steered wide rounding the stretch turn, losing much ground. CHICLUNA saved ground and had no excuses in the running. BELAY was kept forwardly throughout under steady restraint, responded to pressure in the stretch run and finished fast, wearing down SUN LOVER in the final drive. The latter slipped through on the inside in the early running, raced CHALLENGE into submission and then came again under pressure at the end. DAY OFF was eased back off the early pace, was sent up on the outside rounding the stretch turn and then finished well to dispose of CHALLENGE in the final drive. The latter forced a fast pare from the start and had no mishaps in the running. CHIEF ONAWAY showed a flash of speed and then quit. DEVILS PEAK was outrun throughout. SIXTH RACE 1 MILE. John P. BRIGHT NEWS raced in close pursuit of the pace from the start, was placed under pressure in the stretch run and outlasted SOIGNE in the final strides. The latter sprinted into command at the start, showed early speed, but was bearing out in the final eighth. WEARY FLOWER was taken under restraint the first part, saved ground in the stretch run and finished well. SKY ARGO, a forward factor all the way, made a determined bid when straightened out for the stretch run and then faltered in the final sixteenth. PARMELEE T., on the outside of the leaders through the stretch, closed ground steadily at the finish. SAN PIETRO was well up from the start and had no mishaps. GAY TROUBADOUR could not keep up. EASTER HOLIDAY showed an even effort. BAD DAY was knocked out of contention after the start.: CAMPO FALSO was also outrun early. CHASTE had a flash of early speed. BELSHAZZAR was outrun.
