FENG SHOWS IMPROVEMENT TO SCORE AT CRETE ■iC A. * y 9 Evergreen ] Park Purse Headliner of Off-Day Card at Lincoln Fields 1 I Chilly Weather Holds Down Attendance — Vedder Scores Double, but Is Set Down for Foul Riding — Sports Writer Wins for Mrs. Mars ♦ CRETE, 111., June 13. — Feng, which showed poor form in his first and i only other start of the meeting, came back with an improved performance to carry the colors of Hunter Lyon to a popular victory in the Evergreen ! Park Purse, feature of a program given over almost entirely to the less ! fashionable horses at Lincoln Fields. The race was contested over six furlongs and, in covering the distance on a slow track in 1:15%, he won by I a neck to complete a double for jockey R. L. Vedder, who earlier in the - I afternoon was suspended for foul riding. Busy Lutrecia offered the stern-• est opposition for the winner, and in taking second place, finished a length j before Good Actor, which ran third. Busy Busy Lutrecia Lutrecia set set all the pace, while Feng was always in closest attendance. A furlong from the wire Feng, coming up on the outside, forged to the front and then outfinished his rival the remainder of the way to achieve his victory, his second of the year. BUN GOOD RACE. Good Actor and Sky Wind were always among the first flight, and both gave creditable accounts of themselves, but Thread-needle and Delta Dan, both of whom came in for good support in the mutuels, failed to threaten seriously at any stage. Feng was saddled by Robert Ramsey, whose father, Kirby Ramsey, earlier in the day, saddled Boy Baby for a winning effort. Dark, chilly weather prevailed for todays racing, and these conditions tended to hol-down the size of the crowd. W Returning to competition after several months of inactivity, James Emerys Pay Check made every post a winning one, over the six furlongs of the first race. While he was getting home under the Chicago horsemans colors, Gray Ethel, in finishing second, was disappointing those who made her an odds-on chance in the betting. Gray Ethel was always closest to the Emery horse but, though she battled on gamely in the run through the stretch, she could get no closer than a neck to the leader at the wire. Overplay was six lengths farther away in third place, with the twelve-year-old Gold Step next, another four lengths back. Pay Check was riden by Warren Yarberry. SIB AJAX SCORES. Tne second race, also contested at six furlongs, resulted in victory for Mrs. G. B. Scallons Sir Ajax, and defeat for another favorite, Bereit. Sir Ajax, a 6 to 1 chance, came from behind in the stretch to score by a little less than a length, with Honey Roll second and Bereit third. The latter shook off ff I the tiring Tomye without difficulty, but it could not successfully meet the challenge ;e of Sir Ajax, which got up right near the ie end, to be adjudged the victor. Bereit, on n the outside throughout, lacked early speed, i, but closed some ground in the final quarter, r, j j to get third honors, two lengths behind the runner-up. Fluke showed a turn of early speed, but was through after reaching the J turn. The Milky Way Farm colors were seen in front at the end of the three-quarters of a a mile in the third event, a sprint which engaged i- a dozen maiden three-year-olds. One ie of the higher priced yearlings of 1937, 7, which was not sent postward last year, Sports Writer graduated from the maiden n ! ranks in his eighth try, winning with six ix i lengths to spare. Alldena was second, and d I Slavic third. Sports Writer was close up ip ! and under a good hold for a half-mile and ,d I then, when Robertson called upon him, he te responded smartly, taking command quickly ly and drawing out to win all by himself. El Juez was the pacemaker for a half-mile, f- but then began to falter, and was far ir back as he crossed the line of finish. FAVORITE WINS. Another favorite rewarded the judgment of his supporters in the fourth race, a dash ;n of five furlongs for two-year-olds which went g to Mrs. Kiiby Ramseys Boy Baby. This son in of Brandon Mint, racing to his second triumph ,j_ of the year, took the lead soon after sr the start and held it to the end. The Ramsey 2 colt turned into the stretch with a lead of 3f three lengths and increased it to four half If way home, but Hurrigal meanwhile was closing s- in, and at the wire Boy Babys margin in was only one length. In running third, Lambeth n- was six lengths behind Hurrigal and a a length in front of Crusheen. Some Polly, y, which raced with the leaders to the final al eighth, gave way suddenly thereafter and id finished far back. The winner was ridden sn by R. L. Vedder.
