Dorsett Hernandez Colorbearer Wins By More Than Four Lengths — Gabe in Popular Triumph CICERO, 111., May 4.— Valdina Paul, racing in the silks of B. Hernandez and making his second start of the meeting, closed a big gap in the final quarter mile to score an easy victory in the Glen View i Purse on the Monday card, which was the feature event of the eight-race program. After being permitted to drop far back in the first quarter of a mile, jockey D. MacAndrew took the four-year-old son of Sortie to the outside entering the back stretch the second time around, and under pressure gradually wore down the leaders entering the final furlong and continuing on won by a four and a half lengths lead over the early pacemaker, Ballinderry. The latter, having good early speed, took a long lead in the first quarter mile, set the pace to the final furlong, but was unable to resist the winner, although much the best of the others. T. M. Dorsett made a strong bid after going the first half mile, then tired and just managed to save third place. The race was run before a good Monday turnout of turf patrons who braved the cool weather. Time for the seven furlongs was 1:29. Valdina Paul, an outsider in the wagering, paid his faithful backers 0.40 for each . Opener to Light Tide Light Tide sprinted to a long lead after reaching the home stretch to account for the first event. Carrying the colors of Mrs. J. L. Oglesby and ridden by the veteran J. W. Frye, the son of Sweeping Light was rated back of the pace to the final quarter mile, then responding to pressure rushed up swiftly on the outside of the early pacemakers and, having plenty left, came on to win by a five-length margin over High Talent. The latter came from far back to take the place money from Speedy Valley, who finished in third place. Time for the five furlongs was 1:02%. The Needmore Stable, sending their first horse to the post at the meeting, furnished the winner of the second race in the three-year-old filly, Spyway. This daughter of Special Agent and Passage rushed up on the outside when ready and, given a fashionable ride through the last furlong, finished a half length in front of the swiftly closing Michigan Token. The latter, never far from the leaders, closed with a belated rush in the final furlong to get the place narrowly from the tiring Play Greenock. Spyway completed the Daily Double with Light Tide to pay 1.40. Apprentice Harry Schilling hustled his mount to the front in the first seventy yards and, keeping him moving by mild urging, came on to win by a length over his closest rival. Valdina Kate, from the stable of C. F. Wagner, was always closest to the winner, but could never seriously threaten, finishing strongly to get the place. The Le Mar Stock Farms Materialize was third. Closing with a rush in the final furlong of a seven-furlong dash, Shirley G. got up to win by a length and a quarter to account tor the fourth event.
