Kentucky Farms Devoting Tracts to Growing Hemp Nation Calls on Fayette County Breeders to Aid War Effort LEXINGTON, Ky., May 4.— James M. Sharp, chairman of the Fayette County U. S. D. A. War Board, announced today that fifty horse farms in this county have signed up to raise hemp this year. A recent announcement from Washington stated that what was chiefly wanted from this county this year is hemp seed. Stating that the goal of 1,100 acres was certain to be attained, Sharp asserted that more than one-half of that acreage was on the horse farms. Raising hemp seed is not profitable. It is strictly a patriotic gesture by the Kentucky horse industry. Although hemp was a product of this locality years ago, it is a rather new crop to Fayette County farmers. Finding competent labor and equipment for its cultivation is also difficult. Most of the horse farms have not been able to take advantage of the big moneyed crop in this locality, tobacco. Raising hemp seed is more of a sacrifice for the horse breeders than for others farmers and Sharp believes that the sacrifice being made by the horsemen should be accorded recognition. Before the call for hemp seed, there was a demand on horsemen of this county to co-operate in the food for freedom campaign, with which they have more than willingly complied.
