Preakness Hopefuls Arrive at Pimlico Fourteen May Oppose Shut Out In His Quest for Big Double Kentucky Derby Winner and* Stablemate Complete Trip From Churchill in Fine Fettle BALTIMORE, Md., May 4 —The arrival here of Mrs. Payne Whitneys now-famous Shut Out and his stablemate, Devil Diver, whos even more highly regarded in many quarters, far overshadowed anything else pertinent to Saturdays run for the Black-eyed Susans in the Preakness at Pimlico. Shut Out, a bit better shipper than is his accomplished stable companion, stepped off the cars as if "looking for some more horses to beat," while Devil Diver also seemed to have completed the jaunt of about 700 miles in excellent fettle. Leigh Cotton, one of trainer John Gavers aide-de-camps, was in direct charge of this valuable horse cargo. Trainer Gaver went to Lexington from Louisville on Saturday night to visit with Mrs. Gaver and their son, arriving at Baltimore this morning a i few hours after the Preakness favorites 1 detrained. Other Preakness candidates coming from 1 Derby Town on the same Pennsy train with the Greentree pair were Belairs i Apache and Mill River Stables Fair Call, in charge of Tom Driscoll and Arthur Fletcher, respectively. Both shipped without incident. Sun Again arrived on the B. and O. with Whirlaway. Requested, Valdina Orphan, Alsab and • Fairy Manah, four more invaders from Louisville, departed Churchill Downs this morning and are to reach Baltimores ancient hilltop course early Tuesday. Accompanying . Mrs. Payne Whitneys Preakness aspirants here were Century Note and . Swing and Sway, a pair of Dixie eligibles, and Third Degree and Trade Last. Cynosure of All Eyes The Preakness colts naturally are the ! cynosure of all eyes here at the rustic j Baltimore course, and large galleries of : morning watchers will be present all this ; week to observe them in their training moves. The week-end running of this 0,000 . added special, which is the second of the! cluster of three stakes comprising Americas . "Triple Crown" attracts much interest because of the current dispute among ; racegoers as to the relative merits of the ! Greentree pair of Shut Out and Devil [ Diver. Even trainer Gaver isnt convinced I Shut Out is the superior colt, anticipating improvement in Devil Diver off his : Derby effort. Entering the lists as three-year-old I championship aspirants Saturday will be j several formidable performers who avoided the Derby. Best known of them is R. S. • Clarks Chesapeake winner, Colchis, a • ; Maryland favorite. Other possibilities are ■ : E. R. Bradleys Bless Me, Walter Chrysler, ; Jr.s, Bleu DOr and Ramillies. Louis Lee . Haggins Air Current, Louie Mayers Do- , mingo and Mrs. A. F. Shermans American Wolf. , Warren Wright, leading owner of the j 1941 turf season, may be represented by the Arlington Futurity winner, Sun Again. But , trainer Ben Jones today wasnt at all sanguine the home-grown son of Sun Teddy would fill his engagement. The Survivor, which is Tuesdays head-liner at Pimlico, has attracted a promised field of eight. This mile and a sixteenth "j has ,500 in endowment by the Maryland Jockey Club and usually developes a Preakness prospect or two, as in the in- stance of Gilded Knight and Your Chance. Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts homebred . Rascal is the only Preakness possibility in the field named for tomorrows Survivor . however.
