Outstanding Dixie Field in Prospect Whirlaway Arrives ] For 0,000 Test Attention Turns In Brilliant Mile and Eighth Workout of 1 :52 for Tomorrows Stake BALTIMORE, Md., May 4.— Whirlaway, champion three-year-old of 1941; Green-tree Stables Century Note and Swing and Sway arrived at Pimlico this morning to fill their engagements in Wednesdays renewal of the 0,000 added Dixie Handicap. Their addition to the probable field for the run over one and one-quarter miles assures this years renewal being one of the best in the recent history of the j time-honored stakes. Already quartered at the Belvedere Avenue course of the Maryland Jockey Club are Col. E. R. Bradleys Best Seller, W. L. Branns Challedon and Pictor, Mrs. Parker Comings Attention, E. G. Hackneys Sir Alfred, Harry C. Hatchs Filisteo, Charles S. Howards Mioland, Hugh S. Nesbitts Staretor, C. E. Nelsons Alaking, John L. Sullivans Air Master, and Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Impound. Ben Jones, the "Parnell Wizard," made the trip on the same train with Whirlaway and stated he stood the trip in the best of i fashion. Whirlaway added the Clark Handicap to his brilliant record and it was his first victory out of three starts this year. He was a trifle slow in reaching his best stride in that run over one and one-sixteenth miles, but got up to beat Aonbarr by a nose. The latter was slated to make the trek for the Dixie, but plans were changed yesterday and the son of Boatswain will remain at Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Handicap Century Note Doing Well Century Note, brother to Twenty Grand, appears to have taken a new lease on life, while Swing and Sway has been training splendidly for the Dixie. Three prominent candidates for the Dixie I had their final stiff preparation over the Pimlico track Sunday morning, and Atten- | tion served notice that he was ready for the stake. Under a light hold the son of Equipoise was clocked nine furlongs in 1:52. He started his drill in brisk fashion, reeling off the quarter in :23, half mile in i :4724, six furlongs in 1:12 and mile in 1:37%. With no need of a strenuous work, Challedon breezed a mile in 147, and Staretor was timed the same distance in 1:42 Vs. Pictor had his final preparation this morning when he was timed nine furlongs in 1:54. His fractions were :49, 1:141s and 1:41. The strength of the leading Dixie starters is more impressive when their total money earnings are reviewed. Whirlaway, third leading money winner, has gleaned 52,536, Challedon 32,860 and Mioland 35,815. j Whirlaway will shoulder the top burden * of 128 pounds, and Miolands assignment j j 1 is 126. Challedon and Attention are equally j I weighted at 124 pounds each, with Pictor t fifth, under 12 pounds. Swig and Sway ; t and Staretor will carry 117 pounds each, i and Sir Alfred comes next, under 115 i pounds. Best Seller follows, under 114. j £ Air Master, who established a new track record for one mile and one -sixteenth last j I j , week, and Century Note, will pack 112 j | pounds each. Alaking, whose chief claim to fame is a 1 j J victory over Challedon, is the minimum " weight, under 106 pounds, and Impound and Filisteo will shoulder 110 and 108 pounds, respectively.
