SHOT PUT Expect Shot Put to Be Made Eligible To Distance Stakes at Lincoln Fields Pea body Memorial, La Salle And Lincoln Handicaps May Attract Evans Route Star Among the handicap horses expected to figure prominently in the stakes and overnight features to be staged at Lincoln Fields during the meeting opening on May 18* is Mrs. Marie Evans durable Shot Put, now being prepared at Churchill Downs by J. J. Greely for another vigorous campaign. Three stakes on the Lincoln Fields program, the Francis S. Peabody, the La Salle and the Lincoln Handicaps, should appeal to the six-year-old son of Chance Shot and it is probable that he will be named for all three. Nominations for these features, each worth ,000 in added money, will close on May 15. In the last two years, Shot Put earned nearly 00,000. He had his best season in 1940, when he earned a total of 2,945. His most important success that year was achieved in the New York Handicap, at two miles and a quarter, which he won to take down 2,400. Te also accounted for the Bryan and OHara Memorial Handicap at Bowie and the Exterminator Handicap at Pimlico to contribute heavily to his earnings. Impressive Record last Year Shot Put also was seen at Lincoln Fields that season. He won the Lincoln Handicap and finished second in both the Peabody and La Salle. The Evans campaigner also was a potent force in marathon racing last year, when he took down 2,890 in prize money. His most important victories were recorded in the Lincoln Handicap and in the Hawthorne Handicap, but he also took the Isaac Murphy and Snapper Garrison Handicaps, at Washington Park, and placed in a number of outstanding events. Shot Put was turned out all winter, but is taking regular exercise now at the Louisville track, and trainer Greely has hopes of getting him back into competition at Lincoln Fields. The Lincoln Fields stakes are drawing much attention from horsemen and indications are that all five of those on the spring program will draw heavy subscription lists. Besides those which will appeal to the distance-running Shot Put there are the Crete Handicap for sprinters on opening day and the Joliet Stakes for two-year-olds.
