Equipoise Mile May Draw Get of Immortal Stallion Derby Winner Shut Out, Equifox And Swing and Sway Probables Shut Out, hero of the Kentucky Derby and 12 of the 14 horses which finished behind him in that famous fixture, are eligible for the 0,000 added Arlington Classic and 0,000 added American Derby, Chicagos two great mid-summer stakes for j three-year-olds. But almost equally important, from the sentimental standpoint at least, is the probability that Shut Out will arrive on the Arlington scene early to run in the first renewal of the Equipoise Mile, a handicap event established last year in honor of the great Whitney racer, the beloved and lamented Chocolate Soldier, holder of the worlds record for one mile, the mighty Equipoise. Even the casual racegoer knows now, if he did not know it before the Kentucky Derby, that Shut Out is one of the last sons of the dead Equipoise, a member of that sires fourth and final crop of foals. It was in keeping with the sentiment with which the Equipoise Mile was established that the first winner of the event last year was another son of Equipoise, Howard Wells Equifox. Entries for the Equipoise Mile do not close until June 15 but an Arlington Park representative has been informed by Maj. Louie A. Beard, manager of the breeding and racing interests of Mrs. Payne Whitney and her son, John Hay Whitney, that not one, but two sons of Equipoise will be nominated for the Equipoise Mile. These two are the three-year-old Shut Out and the four-year-old Swing and Sway, both owned by Mrs. Whitneys Greentree Stable. It is believed that Mr. Wells will nominate Equifox again, so the race this year may well develop into a battle between sons and perhaps daughters of the great horse after whom the stake is named. Mrs. Parker Comings Attention, who conquered Whirl-away in the Classic last year, also is a son of Equipoise. Interest in the Equipoise Mile, although it is only in its second year, has grown to such extent that it seems destined to become one of the most coveted mile fixtures among American stake races.
