JackTwink on Top at Churchill Downs Letellier Colt Wins Shelbyville Purse Leads Raphael II. Home by More Than Two Lengths — Playante Earns Brackets LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 6.— After finishing second in each of two previous engagements this meeting, Mrs. A. B. Letelliers Jack Twink got back in winning stride when he beat six other sprinters over six and a half furlongs of slop in the Shelbyville Purse at Churchill Downs this afternoon. With Sterling Anifantis in the saddle, the New Orleans-owned winner covered the distance of todays engagement in 1:20% and won by two and a half lengths, as Raphael II. finished second, and Poly-melior third. Jack Twink, who won two races in the Crescent City last winter, broke fast here, but he could not keep pace with Little Kiss, the first quarter mile. After that, however, the son of Twink moved up to take command and then he held his rivals safe the rest of the way. He shook off Little Kiss entering the stretch and, at about the eighth pole, repulsed a challenge from Raphael II., drawing out thereafter to score in decisive fashion. Raphael II. was well placed from the beginning and saved ground most of the way, but after presenting his bids for honors between the head of the home stretch and the furlong pole, he faltered and had to be content with the place. He beat Polymelior a length and a half for that portion of the purse. Winner Equal Choice With Raphael II. Fourth to complete the distance was Anxiety, who failed to rally when shaken up after about three-eighths. Little Kiss was next, having tired after her display of early speed, and then followed Hy-Cop and Agri-cole, who could not untrack himself in the soft footing. Jack Twink, who paid .60 for in the mutuels. was made an equal choice with Raphael II. Todays program was witnessed by another large crowd, in spite of adverse conditions. Lord Vatout, a French-bred four-year-old, owned by Joseph E. Widener, scored his second victory of the meeting and his third in five starts this year when he e accounted for the six-furlong Mocking Bird I Valley Purse, the third event on the card. Hour Al gave the Widener gelding an argument for pacemaking honors to the turn, but then Lord Vatout drew away and won by four lengths. Hour Al remained in second place to a point near the end and t then was beaten a head by Jackorack for runner-up honors. The winner, strongly r supported, was ridden by Eddie Wielander.
