Fifty Dollar Brood Mare Produces Substantial Winners for Purchaser Bogie Way Proves Veritable4 Gift Horse for Belk—Dam Of Way Out, Sir Counsellor CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., May 6.— On a summer afternoon some years ago a "down-on-his-luck" horseman approached James B. Belk in the paddock at Empire City and offered to sell a mare for 0. The unfortunate owner termed the mare a gift horse at the price. Although Belk knew the old adage, "Never look a gift horse in the face," he gazed intently into the mien of the mare Bogie Way, bought her and brought her to his Springdale Farm, near here, for a more minute inspection before placing her in the stud. The 0 "gift" horse has in turn brought gifts. Two of her offspring that have reached the races to date, Way Out and Sir Counsellor, earned almost ,000 for their breeder-owner. Way Out does not race under the Belk silks now, but Sir Counsellor is the three-year-old mainstay of the Old Dominion horsemans modest stable. Last year the gelded son of* Sir Walter, who stands at Springdale Farm, won two of his nine starts, gleaning ,360. Although not a stake winner, Way Out competed in endowed events. In the Christiana Stakes he finished fourth, closing steadily. Later in the year at Empire City he started in the East View Stakes, but was unable to keep up with Requested, Sundial and Colchis and wound up sixth. The well-formed bay filled out considerably over the winter and it may be that he will develop into a useful handicap horse. Foals Filly to Sir Walter The gift mare Bogie Way recently foaled a bay filly by Sir Walter who is a full sister to Sir Counsellor. She will be bred back to the Wise Counsellor sire. In addition to this years foal there are two other gifts from Bogie Way. One is a two-year-old chestnut filly named Madame Bogie, by Sir Walter, that Belk is racing now, and a chestnut colt yearling full brother to the others who is at the nursery. Bogie Way is a daughter of Monks Way — Bogie. One other foal at the place is a chestnut colt by Sir Walter, from the Blaze mare Flaming Mamie. The latter was raced by Belk, and as a three-and four-year-old in 1932 and 1933 was a popular campaigner at Maryland tracks. The mare is the dam of Blustering, also in Belks string and being raced this year, and the two-year-old Madame Mamie. Flaming Mamie will be mated again this year with Sir Walter. The latter is a 13-year-old by Wise Counsellor and the Von Tromp mare Fait Accompli. Purchased as a yearling by Belk, he raced once at two, suffered a foot injury and was retired to the stud. Although he does not serve many mares, he has sired winners.
