I I I California LOS ANGELES, Calif., May 6. A bay filly foaled at the Gaffers Ranch is a half-sister of the California -bred handicap runner Rolling Ball. She is owned by A. A. Baroni, as are her sire and dam Top Row and Zida. The gray mare Chronium, a daughter of Sir Greysteel, brought high price on the second Sunday of the Charles E. Cooper sales. She was knocked down to Ivon D. Parker of Los Angeles for ,000. Parker purchased several mares the previous Sunday. The five-year-old horse Up N Over, who with Burning Star will stand at stud at Eddie Rochester Andersons new farm in Los Angeles county, was bred by Carleton Burke, who still has his sire and dam Soon Over and Genelucile. Up TX Over started 16 times as a three-year-old, winning one race. Buford Butch White, who has charge of the thoroughbreds at Rancho Oro Pri-mero, has been in the employ of Walter Wells for three years. Previously he was two years at Marwyck Ranch and seven years at Elsmead Farm. Dr. Jack Baker, North Hollywood veterinarian, is responsible for saving Doubtful Row, the A. A. Baroni yearling who survived a broken leg. Baker, a graduate of University of California and Cornell University, treated the colt for four months before the break finally healed. i Sandy McKay, of Kinmead Farm, who disposed of the majority of his mares to Charles S. Howard last year, retained three — Ample Lady, by Sir Gallahad HI.; June Moon, by Blink n., and Briarelan, by Sun Briar. Ample Lady and June Moon, who were bred to Grog, are expected to foal in June. Briarelan has a colt by Grog. He is the only youngster on the farm. The latest foals at Marwyck Ranch are a filly by Dah He and two colts by Roman Soldier. A bay colt is by Roman Soldier, out of Gaily Time. The filly, a brown, is out of Chosa. A brown colt is out of Winsome Miss. Winsome Miss and Gaily Time were bred back to Roman Soldier and Chosa back to Dah He. Fiery Miss foaled a chestnut filly by Pharned and was bred back to Roman Soldier. The recent announcement that Burning Star would stand at stud in California injects a new line into Golden State breeding, that of The Porter on one side and Burning Blaze, Big Blaze and Tea Caddy on the other. Owena, dam of Burning Star, is by The Porter, while Burning Blaze, the sire, is by Big Blaze, out of a Tea Caddy mare. Dear Herod, twenty-year-old son of The Tetrarch, will again serve a few mares this season. He is on the farm of Count and Countess Danneskiold in San Fernanda Valley, close to the ranch of Walter Wells. Dear Herod was chosen as the first mate for Gertie, one-time consistent race mare now owned by U. Plavan. The only horse the get of Fairstone in this country is a suckling filly out of the Gainsborough mare Snowscape, now at Neil McCarthys ranch. Fairstone, a son of Fairway — Rosetta, by Kantar, died in England last year. John A. Sattler recently purchased the veteran mare Devil Girl at the Rancho San Luis Rey sale and will ship her to his ranch near Gorman, Calif. Good and Hot, former racer, is now standing at Oakmead Farm, where War Glory also holds forth. Good and Hot is owned by Bert Andrus, manager of Oak-mead. Neil S. McCarthy has a yearling filly by Sansovino, Epsom Derby winner, out of the Fairway mare Green Fee, of which he is pioud. Green Fee, a full sister of Pay Up, winner of the Two Thousand Guineas, was recently sold to Walter P. Chrysler. The former good race mare Primulus recently foaled a filly by Beau Pere at Mayer farms and was bred back to the Australian sire. Primulus is still owned by Frank Smith, of Los Angeles, under whose colors she raced. Mystic Moon, an eleven-year-old mare by Bistouri — Pepper Tea, by Peter Quince, recently brought the top price of ,075 at the Rancho San Luis Rey sale. Pepper Tea is also the dam of Loversall, who got Better Bet and Carmenita. Mystic Moon was sold to Charles Latimer. The black suckling colt out of the imported mare California, owned by Neil McCarthy, will be named Los Angeles. California was named by Lord Derby from whom she was purchased by McCarthy. She is a daughter of Colorado.
