Certie Finishes Second as i Halcyona, Radio Crusade Dead-Heat for Show Award LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 13.— Yar, three-year-old gelded son of Stimulus and Spring II., sporting the silks of Dr. C. N. Finch, won a three-quarters length decision in the Elwood Purse, seven-furlong feature at Churchill Downs today, before a large crowd. Clyde Van Dusens Certie finished second, a neck in advance of R C Stables Radio Crusade and John Oliver Keenes Halcyona, the latter pair figuring in a dead heat for third honors. Yar, who won his second purse of the current meeting, was installed second choice in the field of twelve starters, and paid .80, after completing his task over the fast track in 1:26 Vs. The Finch gelding was given superb handling by apprentice Elvin Hust. Little time was lost at the post, and I starter Ruby White sent the field off in perfect alignment soon after the last horse stepped inside the gate. Certie was first show out of the stalls, but he was ; quickly overtaken by Halcyona, who enjoyed a half-length lead after the first quarter mile. Certie held on well in second position, while Mister Big raced third and the ultimate winner was no better than eighth. Hust saved ground with Yar until leav- | i ing the back stretch, and then brought his ! mount up fast on the inside. Turning for home, Halcyona still enjoyed a half-length advantage over Certie, while Yar came fast ! in third position, just one length farther back. The three leaders staged a brilliant 5 stretch duel in the run to the wire, but it J was Yar who had the most left and he dis- ; posed of Halcyona in clever style, but had I to be hard ridden to hold Certie safe. Halcyona continued stoutly enough to fin- * ish on even terms with the fast-closing Radio Crusade. The favorite, Miss Glam- t a our, could finish no better than seventh. Dr. E. F. Bennetts silks were carried to r a popular head verdict by His Highness in f I ; | i ! ! 5 J ; I * t a r f the third race of six and a half furlongs. Stop II. accounted for the place award, and he enjoyed a four-length margin over Miss Nutmeg, who downed the nine other start- ers for the minor portion of the purse. His Highness stepped the distance in 1:20 !3 and returned "6.60 straight. St. Croix cut out the pace to the final furlong, and then Wallace called upon His Highness. The Bennett gelding responded in fine style and continued gamely enough to withstand Stop II., who closed with a belated rush. Miss Nutmeg, a forward factor throughout, lasted long enough to garner third from Jack Sting. The favored Gingall made a shoqr of eleven other platers in the first race at seven furlongs when he came to the wire five lengths in advance of Here She Is. Suprine finished third, after making a good bid entering the stretch. Arthur Craig handled Gingall, and his mount returned a mutuel payoff. Mrs. Jacob Lowensteins Remind scored close decision over Mabe Monday and Captain Zac in the second offering, which matched twelve maiden two-year-olds at five furlongs.
