1,977 for War Relief at Gansett PAWTUCKET, R. I., May 13.— Rhode Island, smallest state in the Union, added 38,635.79 to its coffers as Narragansett Park concluded the most successful spring meeting in the history of New England racing on Saturday. This amount represents the states share of the pari-mutuel wagering during -twenty-five days of racing, and the sum will be augmented later by additional state taxes levied this year. Narragansett offered a war chest plan through a system of extra races every Saturday, with the tracks six and one-half per cent of the betting and breakage going to war agencies. The sum of 1,977.41 was realized. Opening day was designated as Navy Relief Day and the final day of the meeting as Army Relief Day. On both of these occasions, the Narragansett Racing Association donated a sum equal to that realized from the betting to the service organizations. In addition, a donation of ,000 was made to the United Community Fund and another of ,000 to the Catholic Charities Appeal by the Narragansett Racing Association, plus a further donation of 00 to the Navy Relief Fund of Boston, completing a grand total for the war effort and local charities of 7,477.41.
