Detroit Meeting Is Close at Hand Only Final Preparations For May 23 Opening Need Be Cared For by Officials DETROIT, Mich., May 13.— With the opening of the meeting just a short time away, Edward P. Strong, general manager, and Charles F. Henry, racing secretary, have little more to do than to take care of final preparations for the Detroit Fair Grounds season, the longest on any single track in the country this year.* The Motor City meeting, whose program will be the most ambitious ever attempted at the popular local track, is to begin on May 23 and will run 73 days, through August 15. The Detroit Racing Association has committed itself to a program of 38 stakes and handicaps and they will range in value from ,000 to 0,000. There will be two 0,000 stakes, the Governors Handicap and the Frontier Handicap, and their values are great enough to assure the entry of many outstanding horses. The Governors Handicap at six furlongs should appeal to some of the most accomplished speedsters in the Middle West and the Frontier at a mile and a sixteenth is styled for route-running thoroughbreds. Both these feature events are expected to draw contestants from the Chicago sector and possibly from the eastern racing fronts, to lend an intersectional flavor. Better Horses to Stay for Entire Season Many of the better-grade thoroughbreds will race the entire season here; indeed, the local stakes program was fashioned with that thought in mind. Horses of quality will have plenty of opportunities lo keep in action while awaiting these richer events and this happy circumstance will work for the greater entertainment of Detroits exacting racing public. In addition to the pair of 0,000 attractions, there will be no less than eleven races worth ,000 each. A further inducement to owners and trainers of better type horses is the Detroit ] ! Racing Associations most liberal purse program. It provides for races worth no less than 00 and it includes many overnight contests worth as much as ,500. The Detroit Racing Association can accommodate, roughly speaking, 1,008 horses and there arent likely to be any empty stalls when the opening day rolls around.
