Delaware Stakes Attract Top Horses Greentree Makes Twenty -Six Nominations toThirteen Races Alsab Is Eligible to Three A Added Money Events, While Shut Out Is Named for Kent WILMINGTON, Del., May 13.— The leading three-year-olds, including Alsab, who have won fame and glory for themselves in ,the outstanding three-year-old classics, least and west, this spring, are heavily engaged at Delaware Park where racing begins May 29. In the past Delaware has had jin competition such outstanding three-year-olds of their years as Gallahadion, i Eighty Thirty, Challedon, Andy K., Dit, | Your Chance, El Chico, Mythical King, and ! Rosemont. Alsab, in addition to being eligible for the 1942.sh,000 Kent, which is exclusively for I three-year-olds, also is in the 0,000 Sus- 1 sex Handicap, and the ,000 Brandywine Handicap. Shut Out, the Kentucky Derby i winner who began his career at Delaware ] Park last summer with a victory, also is in I the Kent. There is a Delaware parallel in i that Challedon also began his racing career 1 at the track on the outskirts of Wilming- I ton. However, Challedon did not win in his i debut. Shut Out not only won, but he set a new track record of 1:05% for five and i one-half furlongs old mark 1:06 Vs. An analysis of the entries by general manager Edward Burke and racing secretary Edward J. Brennan would indicate that Delaware Park will have its biggest year of competition. Not only are the entries more numerous, but the outstanding leaders in the various divisions, especially the three-year-old division, are included in I one or more of thirteen stakes. The Delaware meeting runs from May 29 through July 4 with the exception of no racing on the two Mondsy, June 8 and 15. Always a heavy nominator to Delaware stakes, since the track opened in 1937, Mrs. Payne Whitney again is among the leaders with 26 stake entrants. Starting with the j Dover Stakes, opening-day feature for two- year-olds, the famed Whitney colors will be seen. For this ,000 five-furlong sprint Greentree has named Cumshaw, a bay colt by Cohort — Welcome Gift, and Pacifist, a bay gelding by Peache Chance — Lady Be Good. Tierce in Delaware Oaks For the Delaware Oaks, a ,500 mile and furlong event for three-year-old fillies, Mrs. Whitney has named Tierce, a chocolate by St. Germans — Parry in the hopes of making it two straight for this stake. Tangled won the trophy presented by Mrs. Marion duPont Scott last year for Mrs. Whitney. Tangled set a new record in doing it. Always an ardent backer of steeplechas-ing, Mrs. Whitneys nominations for this branch of the sport at Delaware are likewise numerous. For the Spring Maiden Steeplechase, Fieldfare and Carteret have been named, while the former Is also among the entries for the ,000 Georgetown Steeplechase. Four Greentree stars have been named for the 0,000 Sussex mile and a quarter race for three-year-olds and over on June 20, headed by The Rhymer, winner of Hia-leahs famed 0,000 Widener Cup. The others are Cory don, Swing and Sway and Third Degree. Shut Out, Devil Diver, Buckskin and Trade Last are the Whitney entrants in the ,500 Diamond State Stakes, mile and a furlong test for three-year-olds. First Blush, an aptly-named daughted of Halcyon — Fleeting Dawn, and an unnamed St. Germans filly are among the nominations for the ,000 Polly Drummond Stakes, five-furlong test for two-year-old fillies. Hickory Head, Pacifist and Whose are Mrs. Whitneys nominees for the Christiana Stakes for two-year-old colts and geldings to be run July 3. This race is over five and one-half furlongs.
