► Marsch Produces Own Colorbearers Chicago Sportsman Has Band of Good Brood Mares At Crestwood Farm LEXINGTON, Ky., May 13.— J. Marsch, Chicago sportsman, does more than well as a thoroughbred breeder. Why? That is easy to explain. Consider his brood mares: Ruddy Light, 1921, by Honeywood— Washoe Belle, by Sweep. Irvana, 1936, by Blue Larkspur — Princess Camelia, by Royal Canopy. Winner. Turns to Breeding Colorbearers The Chicago sportsman became interested in breeding thoroughbreds after he had enjoyed considerable success in racing. He wanted to breed some of the horses he raced. It was about 10 years ago that he began assembling brood mares. All his operations as a breeder have been conducted here at Thomas Carr Piatts Crest-wood Farm. In 1932 Marsch purchased the stake winners, Ruddy Light and Chicleight, from the dispersal of George Wingfields Nevada Stock Farm. Already those two matrons have become pillars of his stud. Chicleight, winner of the Pimlico Nursery Stakes, has produced two good stake winners for breeder Marsch, and, incidentally, both raced under the Marsch colors — Lightspur and Blue Delight. Both were sired by Blue Larkspur. After she is through racing, Blue Delight will join the brood mares. Ruddy Light, winner of the Clipsetta Stakes, has two daughters in the Marsch stud, Chicleight and Light Lark. Although she is now 21 years old, Ruddy Light is still producing regularly. The brood mares, Miss Bunting and Princess Camelia, raced under the Marsch colors and won stakes. Miss Bunting was purchased as a yearling in 1931 from Bud Fisher, and Princess Camelia was bought the same year by the Chicago sportsman. This year the Marsch mares are being mated with Good Goods, Sun Teddy, Bull Dog, Bull Lea and Pharamond II.
